Remember
the Titans
Remember the Titans is a movie about a desegregated high school that was having problems with the white and black students getting along with each other. At T.C. Williams, the previous white head coach, Coach Bill Yost, was replaced was an African American coach, Coach Herman Boone, which also caused more problems for the school. Coach Boone was able to bring together the white and black football players to play together as a team. During the summer training camp, the players refused to get along as they divided themselves on the buses and at lunch. Coach Boone however forced them to split up according to offense and defense. Although there was tension at first, the players learned to play together and they became friends with each other. When they came back to school, the other students still weren’t able to get along with each other and the town wasn’t ready to make the change the players had. But as the team became successful, the town was starting to be more accepting of people of other races. Also with the tragic accident of Gerry Bertier, some of the students and the parents were coming together and becoming more accepting.
The moral lesson of the story is being able to respect people who are different from you. When the white and black schools integrated in this movie they showed no respect towards each other because they were of a different race. Everyone had to learn to be more accepting of each others differences. Coach Boone decided that he was going to play the best player regardless of race. In the beginning he demanded that the players separate themselves by their position and not by race. He also forced each black player to be in a room with another white player and they had to learn the background of each other. Coach Boone by forcing them two interact with someone from another race resulted in the players getting along with each other. He was able to help the team to be able to respect each other’s differences and as a result they were able to have a perfect season and a state title. By respecting each other’s differences society would function better and be more perfect.
