A Varied Form: Ecotrin | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
Aspirin Difficulties | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
While Aspirin releives pain, by limiting platelet agression it also has many other uses, one of the most importent uses is reducing the risk of heart attacks. Yet when the tablet is ingested it is almost completly dissolves in the stomach. On a limited basis this is fine, yet when being used for long periods of time, (such as thinning the blood to reduce heart attacks) it begins to eat away at the stomach upsetting and permanently damaging it. |

Creation of Ecotrin | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
In order to create a product that could be used for long periods of time, another form of Aspirin was created:Ecotrin. Ecotrin was made to dissolve after an extended amount of time. The extra time allowed it to dissolve in the small intestine rather then the stomach. This ended the stomach problems allowing Ecotrin to be used on a longer basis. |

What is it? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
Ecotrin is aspirin that has undergone a coating process. The coating extends the dissolving time allowing it to reach the small intestines |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Chemistry Behind it | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
In order for Ecotrin to work, there needed to be another layer over the Aspirin to ensure that it would get to the small intestine before dissolving and entering the blood stream. In the early stages of Eotrin, the layer that needed to be applied on top would not stay on the Aspirin, and after about 1 week the layer would peel off.So then came the chemistry. The brilliant chemistry now comes into play focusing on Polarity. To ensure the layer would remain stuck on it had to be made with a polar substance, since Aspirin is polar the two polar substances would attract eachother and remain together. So a chemical called Sencicoat was created. It is then placed over the Aspirin and placed into a setting room were it fully attaches. (Another non-chemistry note is that the Aspirin was also grooved to allow for the coat to cover more surface area; allowing it to attach better) |
