Stay away from my dinner!!
The Cats have been on a totally raw diet since April! Jolson finally gave in and now he won't touch CANNED food! This has been working great for his fungal infection. His coat is better, his condition is good and he LOOVES the food. I think one of the secrets to switching him was taking out ALL grain from his diet. In any case he's happy and I'm happy. I use a recipe supplied by a vet and posted on the Wellpet list. They love this diet and will eat it without fail.  CLICK HERE to see the recipe.

Cats are obligate carnivores, and need a lot of meat in the diet. I believe that the grain based commercial diets are killing our cats. Cats are now dying of kidney disease, get diabetes, hyperthyroidism, IBD, etc. Commercial foods have only been popular for cats for the last couple decades. Before that, Fluffy was fed a variety of people food, and got a chance to hunt for herself. While I truly believe cats belong indoors in today's world, it has limited their diet. While indoor/outdoor cats can hunt and often choose that over commercial foods, indoor kitties aren't given that option. The Pottenger cat studies proved that cats can NOT digest cooked meats. His cats fed cooked meats suffered many of the same ailments cats today do. After taking them off the cooked food it took approximately 3 generations for the cats to recover their health. Pottenger's cooked fed cats were fed a variety of foods, just all cooked. Compared to the high heat, extruded dead kibble it was a feast. Imagine what kibble is doing to cats if on the above diet they suffered? I think this is more than just chance... It scares me to think that we may be slowly killing our felines. My raw-fed cats have great teeth (unheard of in many cases), great coats, great condition, their coats gleam, they're incredibly soft. And VERY active!!! Even the vet has noticed a difference (not that he's seen the younger 2 for anything besides routine care...)

In the spirit of BARF I do vary their diet slightly..

MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY SUNDAY

Raw Mix

Raw Chicken Wings/necks
(turkey can also be used but it's harder for the kitties to handle)

Raw Mix

Raw Mix

Mackerel/veggie/egg mix

Raw Mix Raw meat chunks

I vary the kitties' diet a lot. We often add table scraps, they'll steal the dog food or get what the dogs are getting in addition to their diet. As a treat sometimes they get raw goats milk and eggs for dinner. I give them a multi vitamin supplement once or twice a week to help with taurine though in reality their diet probably includes enough as is.

Overall I am VERY happy with how they're doing on this, even with how Jolson's doing. All have THICK coats, clear eyes, high energy and look great. As a side benefit for some reason litter box odor is completely gone!!! Yes you read that right. NO LITTER BOX SMELL!

**Side note: Jolson now refuses to eat canned food. The others aren't as picky but after giving one meal of canned and living with the litter box smell, canned or dry commercial food will never cross my kitties' teeth again**
