Legend
3 years old

The Keeshond (pronounced caze-hawnd, never hound) originated in the Netherlands and were used as a watch dog on the Dutch Barges, along with being all around farm and family dogs. After almost becoming extinct in the 1800's they were brought toEngland by Mrs Wigfield Digby. In the 1930's they were first imported into America and sought AKC recognition. After achieving this the Keeshond has steadily grown in popularity.

Keeshonden should be a people loving friendly breed. Kees still remember their history and make outstanding alarm giving watch dogs but are not aggressive.

Keeshonden stand about 17-18 inches at the shoulder, and weigh from 40-50lbs. Their profuse coat requires grooming at least once a week to keep it in condition. Once or twice a year Kees 'blow' their coat shedding out their undercoat and some guard hairs. During this time they must be brushed every day.

Keeshonden make intelligent alert pets but are not the dog for everyone. Possesing a wonderful sense of humor they delight in playing tricks on their owner and other animals. They are easy to train and incredibly quick learners however harsh or corrective training methods should not be used. Kees do wonderfully with positive training methods. Especially with an inventive trainer! It can be difficult to keep them challenged enough to enjoy training.

Keeshonden are people dogs and must be with their family. They are happiest when they can share in all of their families activities. Not backyard dogs they are always by you, following you from room to room. With a Kees in the house you are never alone!
