2004 Fishing Reports

Onslow Bay Offshore King Mackerel Tournament - CONTINUED
September 25, 2004

We loaded up the tanks and set sail for the slough in hopes of finding a passage way to the east side. The winds were east northeast and the seas inside the hook were not bad. Just a small ground swell from the approaching storm. We arrived at the Cape Lookout Slough at the crack of light and found a different picture. The slough was in my best terms UGLY. The Sea Gods had the waves standing tall blocking all the passage ways.

Plan 2 went into effect immediately. We settled in on some live bottom off the Cape Rock Jetty in about 49 ft. of water. We had lines in the water at 7:00 am and began settling into a routine. Pop at the wheel and me putting out the spread. At 7:45 am the long line ripped off and we began to chase down our first strike of the day. Dad had the rod for awhile then drove and got on top of the fish as I got on the bow. After one more small run of about 75 yards I worked the fish to the boat for its final play. Dad who is never the gaff man had to do the duties. After 2 swipes(It was not pretty) at the fish he had her overboard and we had our ticket to Biloxi. 20 lb.plus fish to go with the 34lber we caught in the Topsail KMT should surely put us in the top 10 in Division 1. We had accomplished our first goal now to hunt a hog.

The day would end with the team boating only a few other small ones and arrived at the scales to watch our fish pull down to 22.66. Good for 8th place and senior angler honors for Dad. Should have a full crew back for the last fall SKA tourneys. Hope to see everyone on the water and at the scales.

Tight Lines... Capt. AL
