Lars Fredericksen of Rancid approached the band about helping to produce their first demo. The response from the demo was immediate! It landed them a spot on the compilation “Guilty By Association” with the song “About Face”. The comp isn’t the only thing the five lads secured, after a Southern California appearance opening for Strain, they made a solid foundation hooking up with New Age Records. Redemption 87 features Eric Ozenne, formerly of the highly acclaimed bay area hardcore outfit Unit Pride and now currently in the NERVE AGENTS, while Timmy Chunks was the former front man of the legendary New York hardcore/skate band Token Entry. Ian Miller also played in hardcore bands on the east coast before migrating to Northern California to front Hoodlum Empire. Gary Gutfeld, current drummer for the HI-FIVES (Lookout Records), filled out the rhythm section, and Scott Hay, current singer and guitarist of the Struggle Buggies was brought in to complete Redemption 87. Since sharing the stage with names such as Beastie Boys, Rancid, Sick of it All and Mouthpiece, just to name a few, The group solidified a sturdy, dedicated fan base. The bands debut landmark release, is the self titled 12 song LP that is definitely a throw back in time, when hardcore music was powerful, positive and full of much, much more meaning than it seems to hold now-adays. The record also includes a cover of the Antidote classic “Something Must Be Done”. As the band progressed, A.F.I. guitarist Jade replaced the former players. The record will give you a great idea of what this band is about, but what really makes REDEMPTION 87 shine, is their energetic and often times chaotic live performances.
