The tri-color flag of Ireland pictured above was patterned after France's flag and was first presented in 1848 by Thomas F. Meagher. The green represents the Catholic, Gaelic and Anglo-Norman communities, the orange represents the Protestant group of Northern Ireland while the white center section sybolizes the hope of peace and trust between the two.

Thomas Meagher spoke the following when presenting the tricolor to the people of Dublin:

"The white in the centre signifies a lasting truce between the 'Orange' and the 'Green', and I trust that beneath its folds the hands of the Irish Protestant and the Irish Catholic may be clasped in generous and heroic brotherhood."

The Green Flag was Ireland's unofficial national flag from 1798 until the early part of the 20th century. A gold harp on a blue backgound was the flag of Ireland since the 16th century, but in the 18th century the United Irishmen changed the color of the background to green. The color Green symbolized revolution.
