Bulletin (September 21, 2008)
This weekend we welcome Deacon Juan Lezcano. He will preach at our English, Spanish and Filipino Masses, addressing the important issues raised by the current drive to legalize assisted suicide in Washington State. Like Deacons Ted Wiese and Abel Magaña, Deacon Juan is a permanent deacon of the Archdiocese of Seattle. A social worker for Child Protective Services, Deacon Lezcano-Sotolongo professed in the Secular Franciscans in 1986. Recently, he was elected to his second term as international councilor for the Secular Franciscan Order in the United States, representing the order’s 17,000 U.S. members. Deacon Juan and his wife Karen are members of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Federal Way. I might also mention that Juan and Karen are long-time friends of Fr. Jim Williams, who I also hope will join us at one of our weekend Masses.
You probably noticed that we have begun the work on the Ailbe House roof. I am delighted that we are able to replace this roof which has been leaking in a number of places. Your support of the Capital Campaign makes possible this much needed repair. We also hope to begin the work on the rectory roof. Like the Ailbe House roof, it has seen many years of service and is beginning to leak. As you remember, the Capital Campaign enabled us to replace the roofs of the church and school. Thus we will have new roofs for our four major buildings. This work is essential for the present and the future of our parish. I thank you for your support of the Campaign and of Holy Family Parish.
Besides the work on the Ailbe House and rectory roofs, last weekend we marked a notable accomplishment: the inauguration of the new soccer field. This has been a great project of our parish CYO. It was great to see the soccer teams from Holy Family and neighboring parishes make good use of the new field. Also, our parish school uses this field for physical education classes. Special thanks to Ed Horn for his leadership in this project. The picture shows Ed coaching one of the young soccer players in last Saturday’s match with Holy Rosary.
Speaking of leadership, we had a good gathering of parish and school staff, consultative bodies (Parish Council, Finance Council and School Commission), and heads of different parish ministries. In another part of the bulletin, you will find a list of the different ministries with contact numbers. I am grateful for their Stewardship of Time and Talent, and I invite you to find out more about these ministries and to consider how you might participate in helping us build a better parish.
Next Saturday our Parish Council will make an all day retreat to reflect and pray on what it means for us to become a Stewardship Parish. This retreat culminates a year of study and discussion using documents from the U.S. Bishops and the Archdiocese of Seattle. I ask your prayers for us in this important retreat. After the retreat we will be presenting to you the results of this discernment.
Finally, I invite you to join in the novena in honor Saint Lorenzo Ruiz. The novena will culminate with a Mass in his memory on September 28 at 6 p.m. I will have the honor of being the main celebrant of that Mass, together with our parochial vicar, Fr. Armando Red. After the Mass we will have a reception in the parish hall. Please plan on taking part in this important parish celebration. Since St. Lorenzo Ruiz was a parish scribe/record keeper, he is a good intercessor for those with financial worries (and who doesn’t have those worries today). St. Lorenzo, pray for us – and for sound financial advice, please read Phil Lenahan’s reflections in the Stewardship section.

What Are Your Financial Priorities?
A key to becoming truly financially free rests in having priorities in line with God’s design for life. Pope Benedict alluded to this in a recent talk when he said, “Indeed, when man pursues material well being alone, remaining absorbed in himself, he bars the way to his own total fulfillment and authentic happiness.”
Note that Pope Benedict didn’t say we shouldn’t be concerned about our material well being. It’s a question of balance and purpose. Is our primary goal the pursuit of material possessions, or in fulfilling God’s will for our lives?
St. Augustine famously wrote, “Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved you…You were with me, but I was not with you. Created things kept me from you… You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness…You touched me, and I burned for your peace.”
Being a Steward of Providence means fulfilling God’s will by responding well to his love for us. These responsibilities are fulfilled by using the gifts the Lord has entrusted to us in ways that foster growth in our love for God and neighbor. We all need a shout from God once in a while – are you listening? God love you!
