The Philippines will host the First Conference of AV Archive Institutions in the Southeast Asia-Pacific Region at the Manila Galleria Suites, Pasig City from Feb. 19 to 24, 1996. The Southeast Asia-Pacific Audio-Visual Archives Association (SEAPAVAA) will be launched during the conference and hold its First General Meeting.
At least 50 foreign and local Audio-Visual Archivists from the ASEAN countries, Laos, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, and representatives from other archiving associations in Europe are expected to attend the conference.
The five-day activity will feature symposia and film screenings. Resource persons from various archives in the Asia-Pacific region, specifically from the Philippines, Australia, Singapore, Germany and India are invited to handle the symposia on the theme "Film/Video Archiving for the Tropics". Confirmed speakers include Mr. Ray Edmondson, Deputy Director of the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, Mr. Harald Brandes, Chief, Technical Section of Bundesarchiv-Film Archive Koblenz of Germany, P.K. Nair, Ex-Director of National Film Archive of India, and Mr. Guy Pethenbridge, National Director, Advanced Media Techniques, Australian Archives.
There will also be screenings of restored/significant feature films from Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines at the Robinsons Galleria Theater, as well as an exhibit on film archiving.
The conference seeks to provide a regional forum for addressing common issues and concerns related to the collection and preservation of, and provision of access to the audiovisual heritage of member countries.
