A response from Michael Choi MP, received on the 23rd March 2004:-       (TOP)

Dear Ms Bax,

First of all may I apologise for the delay in replying to your email.

May I also congratulate you for your resolve and enduring quest in bringing the issue of seat belts on buses to the forth front of the public debate.

As you are aware the trial of seatbelts on school buses was conducted in response to recommendations made by the independent School Transport Safety Task Force and the Interdepartmental Working Group. The Working group has been reconvened to examine the results of the trial and further investigate issues such as legal responsibility and compliance.

I was informed that the taskforce will provide recommendations to the government by April 2004.

Not wanting to pre-empt the recommendations and the fact that I do not have any expertise in transport safety, I have to admit that it would not be difficult to see the benefit of having seat belts on buses, particularly when the safety of children is at stake.

The next question is likely to be a matter of funding priorities.

May I assure you that I will work with my colleagues to see that the recommendations of the report are implemented as soon as possible.

Thank you for bring this matter to my attention and my best wishes for your endeavour.

Yours faithfully,
Michael Choi MP

NB. Yes, I have read the articles by Senior Seargant Ruler as well as Professor Peter Joubert.         (TOP)

Dear Michael,

Thankyou SO much for your reply.  It's very much appreciated.  I only wish many more politicians would provide such a friendly, sensible and down to earth response (not to mention direct and honest).  Frankly, I think many of them could learn something from you.

I'm also very glad that you've read the verdicts of both Professor Joubert and Seargant Ruler.

Very best wishes - Kim             (TOP)
