NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
”The Higher Cause” closes out the mini-arc started in “Dawning”. It introduces us to the Excalibur’s primary nemesis in the series, a Macronesian super-sub that almost destroys the Excalibur in this, their first encounter. The crew finally return home, having been stranded in the Neptune base for almost two weeks.

There’s an incredible moment in this episode which really would work better on screen rather than in the script: the return of seaQuest. If you combine it with the music I’ve used to illustrate the scene (soon to be found in the Media section of the site...), you get a better idea of how it will play out.

The choice of Patrick Stewart as Lawrence Jackson came about during the writing of the episode. As I wrote Jackson’s lines, Stewart’s voice kept popping up, “saying” the lines in my head.

“That’s pretty much the reaction I had when I first saw her.”
“What is it?”
“UEO seaFire. The first of the Submersible Combat Vessels.”

“Soon, the world will know of you, and the UEO will tremble at the mention of your name. And then… the UEO will be mine. Archangel…”
