UEO Excalibur undergoes sea trials in secure UEO waters, 2039

Designation:
seaWolf-class DSV/ASV

Original Specification:
The seaWolf class was designed for long-range tactical and scientific missions, in expectation of increasing tensions between the UEO and the Macronesian Alliance. The design called for a fast-attack vessel, with advanced weaponry and detection technology.

Class History (taken from Jane’s All The World’s Fighting Ships-2040 edition):
Despite the return of seaQuest DSV in 2032 and the launch of UEO seaHawk two years later, by 2035, the UEO was outgunned two-to-one by Alliance forces.

To rectify this deficit of power, UEO Tactical, assisted by Nathan Bridger, Lucas Wolenczak, and a young, unknown Lt.Cmdr from the seaQuest, Michael Warren, designed the seaWolf class of DSV (named after the renowned class of SSNs built by the United States Navy at the end of the 20th Century), which was approved by the UEO Council in November, 2035.

A construction base was built at Pearl Harbour Point in early 2036, and construction began on the pathfinder, UEO seaWolf DSV 6700, in June of that year. The original twelve planned hulls were reduced to ten, as ASVs 7700 and 7800 are scrapped at the final committee stage.

After the destruction of UEO Atlantic Command in 2037, construction on the seaWolf and the first new seaWolf-class ship, the UEO Gilligan (a name given to it in early construction by Ben Krieg, called in as an observer, which later stuck when it was used on construction papers) was accelerated.

The seaWolf was launched in 2038 with great ceremony, but, on her first cruise, contact was lost, and the sub’s wreck has never been recovered. Telemetry at UEOHQ would later suggest sabotage. The seaWolf class is further reduced in December 2038, when budgetary concerns and infighting within the UEO cuts the class to just six ships in total.

The Gilligan goes missing on her initial three-hour tour (echoing her fictional counterpart) in 2039, and is as yet unrecovered.

Two of the remaining seaWolfs were commissioned in 2039, the Argonaut, and the first of the Advanced Submergence Vessels, UEO Excalibur, containing more advanced systems than preceding ships. UEO Danube was completed in 2039, but commissioned in 2040, and is on a two-month accelerated shakedown. The remaining ship, UEO Tempest, is still under construction, and is expected to be completed in early 2042.
