I sometimes wonder how different the United States would be without its militancy, without its institutional violence? Must we fight and kill just to have a society such as ours? Apparently so. This song is about the young people who lose their lives doing what they think is right, being right or not. It's about those whose names are on or might should be engraved on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in DC. This recording comes via a CD sampler sent to DJs by Mark Moss, editor of Sing Out! magazine in PA] Stacey Earle; Simple Gearle; Simple Gearle; Gearle Records; 1998; www.staceyearle.com [another folksinger who is saving for private spelling lessons; Steve Earle's younger sister (hey, maybe he can teach her?) And so would you!] The Short Sisters; More Wood; A Planet Dancing Slow; Black Socks Press [A listener requested this song a year after hearing it on my show; I hope one of the Short Sisters will send me their new CD, too; the song is for winter wood choppers, like me.] The Short Sisters; Straw Against The Chill; A Planet Dancing Slow; Black Socks Press [the title for their CD comes from this fine song by Bob Franke; back in 1978 Bob and I were 2 soloists street performers out of about a hundred or more on the schedule at Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Boston Harbor, MA. Fellow-musician Stephen Baird was instrumental in setting up the street singers coop that helped us keep our jobs and deal with an often-insensitive administrator at that very commercial marketplace. She was constantly trying to get rid of all of us. When reading Susie J. Tanenbaum's, Underground Harmonies, Music and Politics in the Subways of New York, I was fascinated to find that there are undercurrents of political repression which actively seek to control public expression, such as streetsinging. A few people such as Franke are able to surface anyway, though at what personal cost I can't say. The cost of success may be about as high as the cost of failure. Remember Emerson's essay on compensation?] [9pm break] Christmas Grass; Santa Clause Is Coming To Town; Christmas Grass, A Celebration of Christmas, Bluegrass Style; Audium Records; Koch Records; www.kochentertainment.com www.audiumrecords.com Christmas Grass; Carol of the Bells; Christmas Grass, A Celebration of Christmas, Bluegrass Style; Audium Records; Koch Records; www.kochentertainment.com www.audiumrecords.com David Lee Murray; Donkey With No Name; We're Not Alone; Precious Records http://ourworld.cs.com/murrleedav [David Lee's great Christmas song about the blessing of humilty] SonLyrics@aol.com/ Eddy Lawrence; I Work With My Hands; Used Parts; Prime CD; http://www.snowplowrecords.com/ eddy@snowplowrecords.com Anne Feeney; Maquiladoras; Have You Been To Jail for Justice?
