PLAYLISTS FOR WUWG'S APPALACHIAN TRAIL Vaguely Folk Music Show JANUARY 2002

Singin' Steve Sedberry, producer and host ***playlist for 29 Jan 2002*** Peter Kearney/Fill My House/Make Me A Song.../Crossover Music Stephen Dilauro/ Homer and the Giant Sea Worm (story)/Painting In The Cave Of The Sun [a 20 minute nautical fantasy that's worth the time; Stephen is also known to his increasing fan base as Uke Jackson, the guy who may know every ukelele chord in the world!] Katherine Dines/Hunk-Ta-Bunk-Ta-Boo!/Hunk-T-Bunk-Ta-Magic [She's a spunky, talented communicator of music and fun, a great musical teacher who has the guts to keep on in the face of enormous obstacles....] Johnsmith/Appalachian Rain/Traveler/ [does he or doesn't he work as a record promoter for Smithsonian-Folkways??? Is there a John Smith Club on the net yet?] Joe McKay/Obsolete/Backroad Joe/Good Dog Music [hey, old man get out of the way! Joe is a funny guy!] Mountain Soul/Sunday Morning Rain/Mountain Soul/ [group from Morristown, Tennessee] Kate Campbell/Tupelo's Too Far/ Moonpie Dreams/ Compass Records [I love so much of her music! Kate's set-apartness reminds me of my great grandmother, Julia Lee Broughton Sanders, though Mama, as we called her, never wrote songs as far as I know] Carter Family/ Kitty Waltz/ When The Roses Bloom In Dixieland 1929-1930/Rounder [Even though he didn't call tonight I played John's favorite group] Fairport Convention/Madeleine/ XXXV/Compass [very lively and appealing folk rock] +++++9 PM break+++++ Serena Matthew/unsteady/Dream Planes and Angel Trains/ mp3.com [from outa thuh blue comes this womanchild singer from Tennessee, recording in her gentle childlike voice in her living room... the jury is still out but she intrigues me some; Chapman James directed her toward our radio show] Dana Cooper/Harry Truman Built A Road/ harry truman built a road/ dannacooper.com [this song helps prove that an appealing song doesn't have to make any sense] Chapman James/ San Carlos River (guitar instrumental)/ Arroyo San Carlos/ (pre-release) Sandra McCracken/Now and Then/ Gypsy Flat Road/ www.sandramccracken.com [in a brutal sex-ploitive society like ours too few women have the protection they need to allow their creativity to truly flourish. I believe that McCracken is one of those few. She's young but has what it takes if she can just stay on the path, if she can honor and be honored for God within] Steve Sedberry/I Can See The Light In You/ a few songs/ (pre-release) [the less said about this guy the better] Laura Burns and Roger Rosen/Kilkelly, Ireland/ Fast Folk/ Smithsonian-Folkways [Laura and Roger used to travel to the PMN/SFS gatherings from Boston; they had an unusual relationship, it seemed to me; I never knew what it was but it produced some good music. I hadn't heard this song in many years but remembered that it was good and so played it on the air after receiving this 2 CD set today. Song written by Peter Jones of Washington, DC] Marie-Lynn Hammond/ Flying/Spring of '44/ Vignettes/ www.marielynnhammond.com [multi-talented singer in English and French with many styles; not afraid to tell an ususual story] janis ian and willie nelson/ memphis/god and the fbi/ windham hill [she leaves me speechless, so i just listen] Odetta/ New Orlean/ Lookin' For A Home/www.mc-records.com [Odetta was the first nationally-known professional folksinger I ever heard live in concert thanks to David Walbert and his family and David's then-singing-partner and girlfriend, Kathy Gonzalez. It was 1965 (mostly a very bad year for me) at the Municipal Auditorium in downtown Birmingham. I was definitely impressed with Odetta and her fantastic guitar player, a guy missing several of his fingers; unbelievable but true! I guess Odetta has seen it all by now and her music is still just as convincing] Linda Allen/Executive Order 9066/Victory Music, Washington Notebooks [I had told Johnny Baumgartner (sp?) about this song since he is Japanese-American so he called the station tonight requesting it. The song is about the internment or sequestering of Japanese-Americans in concentration camps during World War Two in the pacific northwest] Pete Seeger/Mack The Bomb/Best of Broadside/Smithsonian Folkways [Johnny's wife, Anja Remshagen, is from Germany but now teaches at SUWG where our program is produced. She wanted to hear some German folk music and I could find nothing in the studio. Elsewhere in storage I have Joan Baez singing a Seeger song in Deutsch but tonight the closest I could come to Anja's native language was a tune by Kurt Weil with English words by Nancy Shimmell. Has anyone German folk music promos to send us, please???] Peter Kearney/ Signs of Hope/ Make Me A Song.../crossover music [As far as my limited vision can see Kearney is one of the very best, mostly-undiscovered Christian folksinger/songwriters in the world today. He has toured the US only once and even then appeared only in Catholic venues. His music really belongs in Protestant churches also. These stupid organization-protecting myths of pseudo-Christianity continue meanacingly while the Holy Ghost transcends every boundary. Praise God!] May God continue to bless us as we work for him and his creation!!!! Thanks for your love and prayers, my friends!!!! ***end of playlist for 29 Jan 2002*** Steve Sedberry, host and producer ***playlist for 22 Jan 2002*** [Tonight I included many story-songs while thinking about MLK and civil rights in this odd time of international transition; isn't it safe to say that MLK saw it all coming forty years ago? Just remember who sent the prophet.] Larry Mitchell/The Bridge/The Bridge/ TexPatriate Eddy Lawrence/ El Barzon/ Going To Water / Snowplow [El Barzon in Mexican Spanish refers to the yoke of debt] Bernice Johnson Reagon/There's A New World Coming/ Give Your Hands To Struggle/ Smithsonian-Folkways The SNCC Freedom Singers/Woke Up This Morning With My Mind on Freedom/ Crossroads Southern Routes / Smithsonian-Folkways Bob Dylan/ Only A Pawn In their Game/ The Times They Are A-Changin/ Columbia [from: Freedom Is A Constant Struggle/Folk Era] Kim and Reggie Harris/Too Many Martyrs (Phil Ochs)/ Freedom Is A Constant Struggle/Folk Era Pearly and Christine Brown / Peace Will Prevail/ It's A Mean Old World To Try To Live In/ Rounder [I'd like to see Rounder re-release this collection of songs from this Americus, Georgia legend] Rollyn Zoubek /Be Still My Soul (from symphonic poem, Finlandia by Sibelius)/ So It Goes/ Shenandoah Sings Music/ www.rollyn.com Pearly Brown/Motherless Children/Georgia Street Singer/ Folk Lyric Carter Family (Sara and Maybelle, vocal duet)/Motherless Children (recorded 1929)/ When The Roses Bloom In Dixieland/ Rounder [Motherless Children was in print by 1904; recorded by Blind Willie Johnson in 1927; The Carter Family learned many songs from black southern musicians, directly or indirectly] Tom May/ Ride em, Bill/ Vested/ www.tommayfolk.com [energized legend from the west that never was] Dudley Connell and Don Rigsby/Hollis Brown (Bob Dylan)/ Another Saturday Night/Sugar Hill [I'd like to hear the story of how the bluegrass audience has responded to this recording] Helen Avakian/Page's Jig/Highwater Music/ http://www.helenavakian.com/info@HelenAvakian.com [enjoyable tune from this singer/songwriter and instrumentalist] JOE MCKAY/ Don't Cook Your Dinner/ BACKROAD JOE/ Good Dog Music/ www.goodacoustic.com [Joe has a great sense of humor: don't cook your dinner on the fire that's burning down your house; this song advises us how to manage our maturing children] Mountain Soul/Ruby /Trotline/www.mountainsoul.cjb.net/ [Singer Amanda Kimbro has a good set of pipes and knows how to use 'em] [9PM Break] Mountain Soul/Trotline/Trotline/www.mountainsoul.cjb.net/ [song may remind some listeners of William Bradford Huie's novel about the usurpation of family farms in the Tennessee Valley, Mud on the Stars] Johnny Jones/I'll Be The Judge of That/Blues In In The House/ Northern Blues Music, Ontario [a fun blues singer/guitarist with lots of good lines] Annie Burns/ Days In Italy/ Days in Italy/ www.annieburns.com [a nostalgic but joyful song; a long way from Michaelangelo but appealing to our lower folk rock nature; I like it!] Bob Gramann/Turn Out the Lights/See Farther in the Darkness/ www.bobgramann.com [Fear of the dark makes it hard to see the heavenly night sky] Bright Morning Star/Harriet Tubman/Follow The Drinkin' Gourd/ Arisin'/ Rainbow Snake Records (lp) [energetic medley from a great group which is currently disbanded; they often appeared together and individually at Songs of Freedom and Struggle gatherings, an organization which they helped found in the late 1970's] Carter Family (Sara and Maybelle, vocal duet)/Motherless Children (recorded 1929)/ When The Roses Bloom In Dixieland/ Rounder [mistakenly began playing this again and at first hadn't the heart to change it but then did and played the next song for John, often our only caller] Carter Family /Western Hobo / When The Roses Bloom In Dixieland/ Rounder John Denver/ Plant Conservation Trees/ (from older PSA promo) [this two minute selection is mostly music and singing but has an encouraging plant-a-tree message at the end. John Denver was so popular during his life that the jealous roasted him in proverbial effigy like lamb over a campfire. Today the same thing is happening to some others, sadly. God lifts up some and others, like me, he keeps low, but we're all a part of his kingdom, and for that we can be glad; we all have a chance to love God and to do as he desires of us.] Julia Macklin/ The Forest/ Half Wild/ www.juliamacklin.com [when I hear a young performer like Macklin I remember how tough it is to get started as a musician and how hard it is to keep going; if we can't maintain our joy then we may as well work for minimum wage or better and leave the music alone. I hope this artist (and all the rest) can make her living and find her way] Stanley Brothers/ Wild and Reckless Hobo/ Long Journey Home/ Rebel Records Tom May/ Rose of the Riverwalk/ Vested/ www.tommayfolk.com [pleasantly tremulous voice; reminds you of your friendly neighbor; eager to please and does] Peter Kearney/ What A Time To Go To War/ Make Me A Song/ Crossover Music/ peterk@hinet.net.au [it's a mystery to me why Peter Kearney is not enormously popular; this two CD retrospective set is highly recommended!!!] Kate Campbell/ Bear It Away/ Wandering Strange/ Eminent [one of my favorites; she's intense, incisive, insightful and persistent but most joyfully captivative and still entertaining] Anne Feeney/ Have You Been To Jail For Justice/ Have You Been To Jail For Justice/ Super 88 [going in many directions at once yet still reaching her goal, musically and logically] Singin' Steve Sedberry/ Walkin' Down 20th Street (guitar instrumental)/ a few songs/ folksinger48@netscape.net [my new CD is finally ready except for a label on the CD] ***end of show for 22 Jan 2002*** ***playlist for 15 January 2002*** The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. -Ecclesiates 1:9 +++show hosted and produced by singin' steve sedberry+++ Susan McKeown/ An Nighean Dubh/lowlands/ Green Linnet [title translated from Gallic: The Dark Haired Girl] Pearly Brown/ Georgia Street Singer/ God Don't Ever Change/ Folk Lyric [long out of print; recording may now be owned by Arhoolie] Susan McKeown/The Snow They Melt The Soonest/lowlands/ Green Linnet [a consummate artist plowing new ground with old songs; this album is a consistently-superior set of 12 compelling songs. A truly amazing and practically-timeless collection] Larry Penn/ Take It The Way It Comes/ The Whiskey's Gone [practical advice and commentary reminds me of a less-academic, more workin' class Bud Foote] Kristin Lems/ Hattie Mae/ Upbeat!/Carolsdatter Productions [Yesterday I got the strong premonition that even after thirty years of notable musical achievements Kristin hasn't even gotten started yet, that once over her current hump (whatever it may be) she has some beautiful, memorable works of art in store but it might take a dramatic change in her perspective to manifest them] Anne Feeney/Maquiladoras (Larry Penn)/ Have You Been To Jail For Justice?/ [Anne is a classic rebel girl who has trouble taking 'no' for an answer; that can be good and that can be bad.] Larry Penn/ Maquiladoras/ The Whiskey's Gone [an old hand at putting on has something to say that needs to be heard] Carter Family/ The Birds Were Singing of You / Worried Man Blues/ Rounder [recorded in 1930] Carter Family/ Worried Man Blues / Worried Man Blues/ Rounder [It takes a worried man to think Woody wrote this song which was recorded by the Carter Family when Guthrie was only 17 or 18] Carter Family/ This Is Like Heaven To Me/ Gold Watch and Chain / Rounder [recorded in 1934-35] Eddy Lawrence/ Catching A Dream/ Going To Water / Snowplow [this mostly a rock album, but this cut and about two others lean in the folkie direction] Eddy Lawrence/ El Barzon/ Going To Water / Snowplow [His new CD, Going To Water, was reviewed by Hugh Blumenfeld in the current issue of Sing Out] ========================================================= WOW-WEE-HOWIE!!! Just after reading a definition of El Barzon.... the WUWG control room experienced a sudden FULL electrical blackout.... What was wrong??? Fortunately John Crosby found that the circuit breaker had opened. This was mysterious until I realized that I had been heating the studio with an electric resistance heater purchased just before Christmas by our station manager to keep us warm. .................................................................................... Also three of about six or seven fairly new satellite downloader modules in the control room have within the last few weeks stopped working. Might the drain from the new electric heater have had ANYTHING to do with that kind of equipment failure? Anyway after resetting the breaker switch we quickly regained full power; I turned off the energy-hogging heater and played another hour of songs! =========================================================== Darcie Deaville/Icy Barrel of a Loaded Gun/Tornado In Slow Mo/Redwing [it's easy to associate Darcie's song about a child being molested by her grandfather with Catie Curtis' amazing song, The Wolf. Both songs need wider circulation in my opinion] Eddy Lawrence/ Birdtown / Going To Water / Snowplow /www.eddylawrence.com [Eddy not only writes, performs, records and mixes all of his own music he also has a stable of animals for special sound effects; this song opens with a cock crowing; even Country Boy Eddy on WBRC TV Birmingham never had it so good!!!!] Peter Kearney/ Start From Where You Are/ Make Me A Song...1966 - 1991/ Crossover Music Peter Kearney/ What A Time To Go To War!/ Make Me A Song...1966 - 1991/ Crossover Music http://www.hinet.net.au/~peterk [an amazingly coherent and artful Christian folksinger from New South Wales, Australia; but will his songs compel the burnt-out disbeliever to finally read their Bible? Will any song so powerful?] Susan McKeown/To Fair London Town/lowlands/ Green Linnet [a song about desparate sea-going cannibals, true love and a sudden life-changing event] Allison Downey/ On The Day/ (single) /Catalyst www.allisondowney.com [this song was written 12 Sept 2001; a neuvo-patriotic ballad from a DC transplant living in Austin, TEXUZZZZZ] Sandra McCracken/ Now and Then/ Gypsy Flat Road/ www.sandramccracken.com [Sandra's music has really grown on me; she seems very vulnerable but.. but.. but.. also quite capable of faithfully serving God with her youthful approach to her original music; from a distance I'll keep an eye on her, somewhat expectantly] Chapman James/ Poppa Flew Away/ Arroyo San Carlos/ Polhemusic (private pressing) [CJ is the nom de plum of my old friend, Buddy Polhemus, from Southside Birmingham; one listener really liked this song and so do I] Larry Mitchell/ The Bridge/ The Bridge/ TexPatriate Records [Michell is a piano tuner/technician/ father of two/ former Mennonite minister and thankfully my old friend] Kate MacLeod/ Revelation #1/ Feel the Earth Spin/ Wind River/ www.folkera.com/windriver/ www.katemacleod.com [This song has a comfortably wide melodic range, features acoustic guitar, harmonica, and violin, all played by Kate MacLeod] Larry Mitchell/ Thin Line/ The Bridge/ TexPatriate Records [country-folk singer from Selma, AL now living in Nashville] David Rovics/DU (depleted uranium)/ Living In These Times/ www.davidrovics.com [Not only children are dying from the side effects of militarism, weapons testing, nuclear waste without understanding why] David Lee Murray/ Andrew's Song/ He Is God's Son/ sonlyrics@aol.com [courageous San Angelo, TX Christian singer/songwriter/survivor] Steve Sedberry/ Katrina/ The Open Heart/ folksinger48@netscape.net [original Autoharp instrumental named in honor of unforgetable Katherine Jane Bauman in about 1968 or 1969; written in 1967, I think; Kathy, where are you now?] ***end of program for 15 January 2002*** ***playlist for 8 Jan 2002*** --WUWG's older CD unit mysteriously malfunctioned again tonight so I got out some favored vinyl-- Wolfstone/Banks of the Ness/This Strange Place/Green Linnet [a sweet, folkie instrumental from a mostly Celtic/Rock band] Leslie Ritter and Scott Petito/Circles In Sand/Circles In Sand/Hudson Valley Records [Scott questioned my brief review so I removed it] David Rovics/ We Just Want The World/ We Just Want The World/ www.davidrovics.com [one of the most prolific and forceful of the current crop of politically-opinionated singer-songwriters; may he soon become an even better disciple of Christ as his basic motivation seems to be love of his fellow humans] Odetta/ Midnight Special/ Lookin For A Home (Thanks to Leadbelly)/ M.C. Records /www.mc-records.com [Odetta has performed in every kind of folk venue one can imagine; she's a show-woman of folk with a wide variety of interpretation; this album is a tribute to Huddie Ledbetter] Julia Fordham/More Than I Can Bear/east west/Circa Virgin [most of this British singer-songwriter's songs are pop/rock flavored; but this one is folky with solo voice and acoustic piano. Very touching.] Center Stage Bluegrass Band/Supertime/Dear Old Dixie/Land Records [Thanks to Georgian Howard Eckard for providing this recording of his band] Mary Sue Twohy/Northern Sky/The Risk Involved/Azalea City [mild folk-rock from a creative young musician living in Takoma Park, MD] Larry Penn/ The Whiskey's Gone/ The Whiskey's Gone/ Cookie Man Music Co. [the kind of song that grabs you right away; Penn is a real character] Kristin Lems/ Move On Bravely Ahead/ UpBeat!/ Carolsdatter [smart, good musician and very creative songwriter; her sense of humor is very strong and pretty healthy, mostly. This song might be hip hop (whatever that is?) but I'll call it electronic folk with a very positive message] Dana Cooper/ Harry Truman Built A Road/ Harry Truman Built A Road/ www.danacoopermusic.com [appealing sound with a nebulous message] Joyce Katzberg/ What You Do With What You've Got/ Joyce Katzberg, White Rose Music, P.O. Box 187, Warren, RI 02885 [Like most endearing folksingers Katzberg possesses couragous love for the downtrodden] Steve Sedberry/ The Open Heart/ The Open Heart/ Steve Sedberry Music [my celebrated shadow... from 1994; poem inspired by my feelings for Mirna Zekic from Tuzla; Pete Seeger liked the poem and inspired me to turn it into a song] Dominican Sisters/ Lord, Here I Am (cassette) [Sister Amy McFrederick won't send me her latest recordings since I won't send her any money, but I still love many of her songs! May she get rich enough to send out some promos so more people can hear her inspired music] Carter Family/ Jimmy Brown The Newsboy/ When Roses Bloom In Dixieland/ Rounder [Recorded in 1929-1930; a classic song of poverty and determination from the pre-bluegrass days] Carter Family/ Cannonball / When Roses Bloom In Dixieland/ Rounder [nowadays the Carter Family is a world unto itself; their music deserves special attention] Glenn Yarbrough/ For Emily Whenever I May Find Her/ For Emily Whenever I May Find Her/ RCA [a creamy, dreamy seduction of sound; early song by Paul Simon] Two Of A Kind/ Crazy World/ Live Each Momet/ david2kind@aol.com [Written by Jenny during the so-called Gulf War, 1991; wish I could say the world was less crazy now] Pierce Pettis/God Believes In You/Everything Matters/Compass [He's a complex person who I believe is moving in the right direction, though I've never met him! He's practically a neighbor.] Glenn Yarbrough/ Tomorrow Is A Long Time/ For Emily Whenever I May Find Her/ RCA lp [an early song written by Bob Dylan] Kristin Lems/ The Language of Love/ UpBeat!/ Carolsdatter [Kristin songwriting can be wise yet still optimistic: a good combination; this song tells a rarely-observed truth about the way men and women communicate] Glenn Yarbrough/ Crucifixion (Phil Ochs)/ For Emily Whenever I May Find Her/ RCA lp [an excellant arrangement of an amazing song by Phil Ochs which while not comprehending why Christ died tells an interesting story full of other truths; there are many memorable lines in this song; my favorite recalls how the modern church has selfishly and short-sightedly redefined Christ's essential message: to the safety of sterility the threat has been refined] Phil Ochs/Freedom Riders/ Best of Broadside/ Smithsonian-Folksways [Journalist-actor listener Miles Busby wanted to hear some Phil Ochs and this is what I spontaneously chose; it's obscure but interesting.] Leslie Ritter and Scott Petito/ One Person /Circles In Sand/ Hudson Valley Records [a touching story of a very personal loss] Martha Radclyffe/ In Your Heart/ Martha Radclyffe/ Athena [lp recorded in Nashville, 1971; long out of print; hopefully she'll record again soon] Odetta/Jim Crow Blues / Lookin For A Home (Thanks to Leadbelly)/ M.C. Records /www.mc-records.com [this song helps explain racism in Leadbelly's day and now] Odetta/You Don't Know My Mind (Leadbelly) / Lookin For A Home (Thanks to Leadbelly)/M.C. Records / www.mc-records.com [Leadbelly knew of what he sang; too bad so many other musicians are only pretenders wondering why they get so little response] Steve Young/ Worker's Song (Handful of Earth) / Primal Young/ Appleseed [it's a sad universal truth that many nations expect the landless peasant to bear arms for the enrichment of their masters] ***end of program for 8 Jan 2002*** Gradually I'm learning more about making CD's from older recordings so soon maybe my own songs will start appearing more regularly a s well as songs by musicians I've recorded during the past thirty-some odd years.
