Having just seen the moving film, Ghosts of Mississippi, I felt compelled to play a song by a guy who most probably knew and worked with the film's central historical character, NAACP's first Field Secretary in Jackson, Medgar Evers. Frederick Douglas Kirkpatrick, Jr. grew up in northern Louisiana, played college football at Grambling, worked as music director with MLK, Jr. at Resurrection City on the National Mall in DC and founded 'Hey Brother Coffeehouse' in NYC, the city where he died of viral hepatitis (wasn't it?) after refusing medical care. I'd always thought that his stubborn solidarity with the poor who had little to no access to medical care led to his seemingly-unnecessary martyr's death, but maybe I'm totally wrong. I'd be interested in hearing from other people who knew this unusual freedom fighter and minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Let's put together a Brother Kirk memorial webpage featuring his music and photos. Sis and her husband Gordon Friesen founded Broadside Magazine in their 'gub'mint' housing forty years ago publishing songs by some of our favorite songwriters before we'd ever heard of them.] (*) Cynthia Jean Givens; Soften My Soul Eck Robertson; Sally Goodin; There Is No Eye: Music For Photographs; Smithsonian-Folkways [rousing solo fiddle tune recorded by photographer-musician-aural historian John Cohen in Robertson's home] ***end of show for 16 July 2002***
