Would the elder Josh White, whom the song is about, enjoy this tribute? In my opinion the writer's use and repetition of an offensive and abusive word detracts from an otherwise good song. I hope Jack will edit and re-record this one.] Porter Wagoner; Silver Eagle Meets The Great Speckled Bird; Unplugged; Shell Point Records 2002 www.shellpointrecords.com www.porterwagoner.com [sung with Willie Nelson] Porter Wagoner; Blue Velvet Band; Unplugged; Shell Point Records 2002 www.shellpointrecords.com www.porterwagoner.com [an interesting song about entrapment by an atrtractive woman] Lead Belly and Josh White; Don't Lie Buddy; Classic Blues; Smithsonian-Folkways 2003 [Lead Belly shows an unusual side of his character in this song; Josh takes the lead] Kate Campbell; Walk Among Stones; Monuments; Large River Music 2002 www.katecampbell.com Kate Campbell; Funeral Food; Visons of Plenty; Compass 1998 www.compassrecords.com Kate Campbell; Perfect World; Visons of Plenty; Compass 1998 www.compassrecords.com [a great song for ending a show in these troubled times] ***end of show for 18 March 2003***
***playlist for 11 March 2203*** [Tonight while I was experimenting with new ways I might use the existing studio equipment I made some dumb mistakes. But the studio is always broadcasting (24 hours a day) and if I don't try something while live on the air I can never find out if it's possible. There is no one to train me. Who said that life is like learning to play the violin on stage before a huge audience? We goof. We all goof. Ha, ha; may as well laugh! If I had an assistant I could blame him/her. Thank God for small favors.] [About thirty years ago I was ineptly hawking my original songs in Nashville when I met a producer who gave me an 'folk' lp of the mostly original music of Martha Radclyffe. Nashville is not big on 'folk music' but a few folksingers do pass through there on occasion. Martha had some success in 1971; as she wrote in an email once, 'everything happened in 1971' including an appearance at the Philadelphia Folk Festival and mention in some music trade magazines. She later married and she became an attorney. Her marriage ended but she still practices law. She works for the City of New York, having worked until 11 Sept 2001 one block north of the World Trade Center Towers. I encourage her to start performing and recording again. Maybe after hearing her music you will too. You can find her lp on ebay every now and then. Her album was produced by Rick Powell of Nashville for his label, Athena Records. Significant contributions on guitar and dobro were furnished by a much younger Norman Blake before he became so well known. Post production additional tracks by the London Symphony Orchestra. All songs were original except for the fifth and tenth tracks by Bacharach/David and by Gordon Lightfoot, respectively. I played the whole album, back to back, in sequential order.] Martha Radclyffe; Time's No Friend of Mine; Martha Radclyffe; Athena [1971; lp] Martha Radclyffe; In Your Heart; Martha Radclyffe; Athena [1971; lp] Martha Radclyffe; The Pleasure of Your Company; Martha Radclyffe; Athena [1971; lp] Martha Radclyffe; If I Tried To Tell You; Martha Radclyffe; Athena [1971; lp] Martha Radclyffe; I'll Never Fall In Love Again; Martha Radclyffe; Athena [1971; lp] Martha Radclyffe; Tennessee; Martha Radclyffe; Athena [1971; lp] Martha Radclyffe; Leaving; Martha Radclyffe; Athena [1971; lp] Martha Radclyffe; Through My Eyes; Martha Radclyffe; Athena [1971; lp] Martha Radclyffe; To Try Finding You; Martha Radclyffe; Athena [1971; lp] Martha Radclyffe; Early Morning Rain; Martha Radclyffe; Athena [1971; lp] The Gibson Brothers; The Lighthouse; Bona Fide; Sugar Hill 2003 [featuring lead vocal by Eric and Leigh Gibson's younger sister, Erin, and she shines] Ed McCurdy; When the Curtains of Night; Song of the West; Tradition Everest 2061 lp [a short but sweet version of this beloved 'cowboy' song, to be sung after tucking the cows into 'bed.'] The Lamplighters; The Lighthouse; Introducing The Lamplighters; [an lp by a Gospel Quartet whose manager, Richard Roberson, lived in Lindale, GA, near Rome about 30 to 40 years ago; it's the same song as sung by the Gibson Brothers this year but a much slower and slightly dramatized version.] Tom Lehrer; Lobachevsky; Songs By Tom Lehrer; Reprise lp [this song about the lighter side of numerical academia was registered for copyright in 1952 or 1953. Does anyone know if Tom is still a professor at UC Santa Cruz?] Kate Campbell; Jesus and Tomatoes; Visons of Plenty; Compass 1998 www.compassrecords.com [An odd but interesting song by this ecclectic, often everyday topical 'folk' song writer; It seems that once Kate tackles a subject she doesn't let go till a song pops out whole. [9 PM break] Marion Wade; We Hate To See Them Go (the gentlemen of distinction in the army); What A Day of Victory!; Rainbow Snake Records, 1982 [the late Marion Wade was an active member of PMN/SFS as I was 20 years ago. The humorous anti-war song is by the late Malvina Reyonds.] Gary Davis; If The Lord Be For You; If I Had My Way: Early Home Recordings; Smithsonian-Folkways 2003 [some call him the Reverend Gary Davis but I don't as there is nowhere in the Bible that tells me to revere a human who preaches God's word. God is the only one entitled to glory. That aside I have the same respect for preachers that I have for other servants of God. Let's discard the labels and get down to the serious business of doing God's will; Davis was recorded at his home by John Cohen in early 1953. This is a wonderful recording in my little opinion. This North Carolina native moved north as did many of his generation if only for a better opportunity to survive hard times. Where do we move now in these hard times?] Gary Davis; Twelve Gates To The City; If I Had My Way: Early Home Recordings; Smithsonian-Folkways 2003 Gary Davis; You Got To Move; If I Had My Way: Early Home Recordings; Smithsonian-Folkways 2003 Gary Davis; We Are The Heavenly Father's Children; If I Had My Way: Early Home Recordings; Smithsonian-Folkways 2003 The Singing Nun (Soeur Sourire); Dominique (Dominic); The Singing Nun; lp 1965 Kate Campbell; Sing Me Out; Visons of Plenty; Compass 1998 [read a fascinating story about Kate and her prominent Baptist preacher father: http://www.baptiststandard.com/2001/5_21/pages/henry.html] Ricky Shirley; We Will Ride; Promises; Daniel Productions [this song actually sung by Ricky's children Tara, Darron and Ashton Shirley; Ricky cooks at the Chatterbox Cafe in Buchanan, GA. This is Southern Gospel Music with more percussion than I usually play on this show. Yet it's good to support local talent; produced by Johnny Daniel, Tallapoosa, GA. Contact Ricky, 47 Perry Lane, Buchanan, GA 30113, 770-646-8379] Betty and The Baby Boomers; Your Daughters and Your Sons; Tumbling Through The Stream of Days; CD 1997; Betty and The Baby Boomers c/o Jean McAvoy, RR 2, Box 53, Clinton Corners, NY 12514 [song by Tommy Sands] Betty and The Baby Boomers; Caledonia; I'll Always Sing!; CD 1992; Betty and The Baby Boomers c/o Jean McAvoy, RR 2, Box 53, Clinton Corners, NY 12514 [song by Douglass Dougie MacLean. Caledonia is an ancient, poetic name for Scotland] Susana Baca; Aparition; Espirituviva; www.luakabop.com [I first heard Susana via a Sing Out Magazine CD. Thanks, Sing Out staff! 2002] ***end of show for 11 March 2003***
