A Comprehensive Seed Database

An Opportunity to Review Our Seed Database and Provide Feedback

The Seed Technology Educational Program (STEP) at Colorado State University, in conjunction with the USDA-ARS, has developed a unique seed database which we would like to make available for broad distribution and usage. This database contains seed pictures and descriptions of over 700 species of seeds. The database contains all of the seeds required to pass the Registered Seed Technologists examination and the Association of Official Seed Analyst's Certification.

This site contains the noxious weed seeds of each individual state as administered by the Federal Seed Act. The seed database directly links to each state for an individual noxious weed seed list. This allows the user to identify the noxious weed seed and determine if the seed is Prohibited (Primary) or Restricted (Secondary).

This seed database is multidimensional. We are in the process of revising this database. The seed database will have an impact on everyday, real-life situations within the seed industry, seed research, seed education, and other applications where seed identification is needed. We will be expanding this seed database to include a seed identification wizard and other features as indicated in our survey. Some of the intended uses are outlined below:

Seed Analyst/Lab Technician: The seed analyst can use the seed database for learning seed identification and in determining unknown seeds. This seed database is a must for every seed laboratory.

Seed Industry:
Seed Conditioners:
The seed conditioner may use the seed database as a reference for the seeds found during seed conditioning and if these seeds are crops, weeds, or noxious. As with the seed analyst, the conditioner can familiarize him/herself with the identification of seeds found during routine examinations of seed lots.

Seed Labelers: The state noxious weed seed lists referenced for all states allow an easy means to make management decisions on various seed lots in their inventory. Links to the noxious weed seed laws found in this seed database are unique to this web site.

Seed Marketing/Sales: This seed database will provide valuable information to assist in seed sales anywhere in the U.S.

Seed Buyers/Customers: Purchasers of seed can access this site to verify the proper classification of crop as well as common and noxious weed seeds for their use.

Educators:
College and University:
This seed database is the only comprehensive collection of seed photos and descriptions on the internet. This seed database may be used at the university level for courses in botany, seed science, agronomy, and horticulture.

Agricultural Extension: Extension personnel may use this seed database during educational meetings in relationship to seed quality, weed control, and as a resource for county and state personnel. The link to the noxious weed seed lists will be particularly helpful in this respect.

High School and Vocational: This database may be useful to high school educators in preparing FFA crops judging teams, teaching principles of seed identification and for use in biology courses.

General Public: Anyone interested in the identification of seeds. This includes botanists, horticulturalists, and garden center personnel.

Based upon this survey, the seed database at Seed Images.com will be available by subscription during the fall of 2002.
