10b FORGOTTEN PAINTING BRINGS FIRST PRIZE
Prema Ramalingam sent a painting as an entry to a competition organised by the Chinese Art Association of Houston, Texas, two years ago and did not hear a thing about it until last week – she won the first prize.
“I forgot all about the contest when I did not get any result from the organisers after sending the painting in 1999. Also I felt I did not stand a chance as it was an international contest,” said the 17 year-old Prema in an interview at her residence in Taman Seri Kuantan here.
Prema said she was astounded to receive a letter stating she was the winner of the competition with her painting entitled “ A Building ”.
The winning ‘building’ was none other than the famous Sultan Abdul Samad building in Kuala Lumpur. She said she decided to submit her artwork after her art tuition teacher informed her about the competition.
“I am proud of the win as it was beyond my expectations,” said Prema, a former SMK Tengku Afzan student who is waiting for her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia results.
Her victory has spurred her in her aspiration to become a graphic designer. For her accomplishment, Prema received a trophy and a certificate, but her regret is that the organisers have kept the painting.

10c MISSING BOY BACK WITH FAMILY AFTER FOUR DAYS
A four-year-old boy, who went missing during a shopping trip with his mother at India Street here last Sunday, was reunited with his family on Thursday.
Mohd Faizal Majid, from Kampung Telaga Air, spent four days with a family in a squatter colony near the Riverview housing estate while his family franticallysearched for him.
Siti Nazar, 42, had brought the boy home to the colony after finding him wandering behind the Electra House shopping complex at about 2 pm that Sunday. Siti Nazar, who is childless, claimed that she took the boy home after failing to locate his parents.
“I was confused,” she said, when asked why she hesitated to take the boy immediately to the police station in the vicinity. Siti Nazar only made the decision to surrender the boy to the Bintawa Police Station on Thursday afternoon after much coaxing from a concerned neighbour, who heard about the missing boy from a local radio announcement.
The neighbour told Siti Nazar that it was wrong to keep the boy, who had by then made friends with other children in the colony.

10d TELEVISION TURNS 75 (PART 1)
The incredible human mind has pioneered a number of remarkable scientific inventions over the past century. But the most influential invention is none other than the television.
It has not only transformed our domestic lives but has also altered the nature of our society and our understanding of the world around us.
This year is the 75th year of the birth of the television age. It was on January 26, 1926 in a cold, crampedflat in Soho, London, that the first ever, flickering TV pictures were transmitted before an audience.
The man responsible for this event was John Logie Baird, an inventor who was more interested in his invention than his appearance or his surroundings.
The first transmission
was seen on a strange equipment made of various household
materials
. They were all held together by sealing wax and string.

10e TELEVISION TURNS 75 (PART 2)
Ten years after Baird’s first demonstration of television, there were only about 1,000 sets in Britain. Today, there are more than 20 million with 98 per cent of households having one television set.
Television is a rich source of entertainment and knowledge. Through television we have witnessed the most important events of recent decades, such as the first landing on the moon in 1969, the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and even the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997.
If Baird were alive today, he would be fascinated by the sophistication of modern technology, especially digital transmission. He would also be amused by the commercials and the power of TV advertising.
Baird also made the first video recordings in 1926 using a device which can still produce clear pictures today. He died in 1946, 20 years after he transmitted the first moving image on a screen.
