A widow, Mariam Kulop of Padang Tenggala, has a lot to thank her cat because it warned her about a thief who had entered her house.
Mariam said the thief must have entered her house when she went out to dry her clothes at 8.30 a.m. last Monday. “When I came back into the house, my cat was making some strange noises. I thought that a snake must have come into the house. However, I could not find any even when I shoved a broom under the cupboard and bed several times.”
Mariam related how her cat kept staring at her. “It looked straight at me and then looked towards the roof. It did this several times. When I looked up, I had a fright. There was a man crouching on the beam which supports the roof,” said Mariam.
The thief immediately jumped down and put a finger across his lips signalling her not to shout. “I nearly blacked out but luckily he sprinted out of the house,” she added.

RECYCLE TO SAVE UNWANTED ANIMALS
The Malacca Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) has come up with a novel way of helping unwanted animals. They raise money by recycling old bottles, tins and clothes and use the money for the upkeep of the unfortunate animals.
John Tan, the founder of MSPCA, used to spend his free time rescuing and shelteringstray dogs and cats. However, this became very expensive as their numbers increased. So, with the help of a few friends and with some contributions, MSPCA was set up.
Today, MSPCA cares for about 90 cats and dogs. Most of the money comes from recycling activities. Volunteers help to collect old newspapers, bottles, tins and clothes which are later sold to raise money. Contributions come from people who care. Some big companies also give a helping hand. For example, Jaya Jusco Supermarket helps by providing the shelter with left-over fresh food.

“BAD APPLES” GIVING CABBIES A ROTTEN NAME
A few unprofessional cabbies have tarnished the image of the 40,000 taxi drivers in the country. ‘To offset the negative image, they must think of themselves as entrepreneurs who are duty-bound to give their best services to the public and in a courteous manner,’ said the Entrepreneur Development Minister during a ceremony to hand over taxi permits at Dewan Warisan in Langkawi.
He also suggested that cabbies could diversify into related fields such as homestay and food business.
Taxi drivers
have also been advised to refrain from putting political
posters on their taxis or renting out their taxi permits.

Pandas are closer than ever to extinction with only 1,000 left in the wild, said the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) in a recent report.
More pandas are dying than are being born. The WWF blamed the crisis on financially-strapped wildlife reserves for pandas in China, ongoing poaching and a loss of habitat due to deforestation.
The panda is
known
as a symbol of conservation worldwide.
To save the species, WWF called for the
creation
of a permanent panda financial fund.

HOSPICE FOR AIDS PATIENTS TO OPEN
Thanks to the Japanese Embassy here, terminally-ill AIDS patients will finally get better care when Malaysia’s first hospice for the disease opens in the middle of the year. The Malaysian AIDS Council received a grant of RM314,333 from the embassy.
Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir said, “We have been trying to establish the long-awaited Hospice Cahaya for the past five years and our main problem was to find a place to set up the hospice because we also had to face resistance from the local community.” Marina also said the hospice would provide home care for the terminally-ill AIDS patients abandoned by their families.
Hospice Cahaya
has 17 well-trained staff and can
accommodate
seven to eight patients at any one time. It will identify
these patients via the doctors and take them in and provide home care so
that they can live in dignity.
