A popular Thai spicy prawn soup called tom yam kung contains ingredients which may help prevent digestive cancer, researchers said yesterday.
Substances found in galanga, lemongrass and kaffir limes, three main ingredients in the soup, are effective in inhibiting tumours in the digestive tract, said the researchers, from Kyoto and Bangkok universities.
“A combination of the main ingredients in the soup can block cancer cells,” said a researcher. But he warned that much more research was needed to confirm how effective it was and to determine how science could best use the soup’s ingredients.
Research into tom yam was initiated in 1993. Nevertheless, the study did not establish how much tom yam kung a person would have to eat to beat digestive cancer.

Do you feel scared or nervous about making new friends? Well, just remember: most kids at school are feeling exactly the same!
There will be many people around and it is good to be friendly with everyone. You will find that there are some who click better with you and others who don’t. It’s natural.
It helps to find similar interests to start off a friendship. If you are into sports, you will probably want friends who enjoy playing the same games you do. Likewise, if you love to read books, find friends who read too.
Think about your favourite things to do and try talking to your classmates at recess about your hobbies.

16c SPECIAL CHILDREN, SUPER PARENTS
Mohd Zubir and his wife Rosna prefer to refer to their seven-year-old twin daughters, Nursyanaz and Nursyafinaz, in kinder terms such as “slow learners” or “late bloomers” rather than “handicapped”.
They noticed something was not right with the twins when at 22 months they were not able to walk or talk. A neurosurgeon examined the children and confirmed that they were “late bloomers”, a condition that could have been caused by Rosna’s prolonged labour.
They consulted many doctors and child experts but none could give them any assurance. They hinted that the twins’ situation requires close attention from the parents, siblings and child-minders.
An administrative clerk at that time, Rosna quit her job to give her best to her daughters, although she was looking forward to building a career for herself.
Both Zubir and Rosna said as a family they share a special bond because of their special twins and they feel God wants them to live with a lot of faith in Him.

16d MAN GIVES AWAY CASH FREELY
A man caused traffic chaos here by handing wads of cash to passersby, the Times of India said yesterday.
Witnesses said the man freely distributed thousands of rupees to anyone who would take it. Many though were too stunned to react and others shied away suspecting trickery.
“It was about 4 pm when he walked up to me and said he was here to change my destiny. He opened his bag and asked me to take as much money as I liked,” said Shatrughan, a water cart attendant. However, he did not take any.
Undeterred, the young man, dressed in jeans and t-shirt, moved on and handed out money to some cobblers, sitting at a bus stop, who gratefully accepted the generous offer.
The jackpot party came to an end when a huge crowd gathered around him in the middle of a bus central area, compelling the police to take him to a nearby police station.
A police officer said that the man claimed that he was distributing money because of a dream he had. The officer added that subsequent investigations revealed the man belonged to a rich business family.
Family members explained to the police that the man, whose first name is Krishnan, occasionally suffered from bouts of hallucination.

An 18-month old baby boy cheated death when he was blown about 200 metres while asleep in his cradle when strong winds blew away the roof of the house in Kampung Mesapol Lama here.
His mother, Siti Zubaidah Idol, 32, said the cradle with Mohd Riduan Petrus asleep inside was also blown away as it was tied to the beam supporting the roof of her house.
Siti Zubaidah, who was in the house when the incident happened at 3.30 pm, said she tried to grab the cradle but failed when she fell.
A neighbour, Ali Kassim, 39, found Mohd Riduan lying unconscious on the ground behind his kitchen with the cradle stuck on the roof of his house.
Mohd Riduan was immediately taken to the district hospital and regained consciousness an hour later.
“ I am thankful to the Almighty that my son is safe and sound,” Siti Zubaidah said, adding that her husband was not home when the wind struck.
She said the strong wind suddenly struck and lasted for only two minutes catching many villagers off guard.
A staff of the hospital said Mohd Riduan only sustained a slight injury to his head and was being warded for observation.
