A shoplifter met his match in a gutsy salesgirl and a civic-minded member of the public at the busy Holiday Plaza here yesterday.
Noraziah Ali chased after the culprit who was trying to flee with a bagful of medicated oil from the pharmacy where she works.
She, however, could only grab hold of his shirt after catching up with him. It tore off his back and the suspect, with several large tattoos on his body, then ran down two floors to the car park in the basement.
However, Noraziah was not about to give up. She continued with her chase and also alerted several bystanders.
The suspect was finally caught by a shopper and was handed over to the police.
Noraziah said that the suspect had two accomplices who managed to escape when the suspect triggered the beeper as he tried to leave the pharmacy with the unpaid goods.

20b JAILED 22 MONTHS FOR BEATING MAID
A Hong Kong employer who beat her Indonesian maid with a toilet brush and burned her with a hot iron has been sentenced to 22 months’ jail.
The sentence against Leung Wai Kuen was one of the most severe ever imposed in the territory for abuse of a domestic helper.
In her ruling, magistrate Kelly Shui slammed Leung’s treatment of her maid as inhuman.
The court earlier heard how Leung beat the maid about the waist, nose and arms with a toilet brush until it snapped because she had not finished the ironing. She then pressed the hot iron on the maid’s neck.
Leung, who was convicted for causing grevious bodily harm, said she plans to appeal.

20c DON’T PAY RANSOM FAMILIES OF KIDNAP VICTIMS TOLD.
Police have advised the families of kidnap victims not to give in to demands of kidnappers as this might encourage more of such crimes being committed.
They advise victims’ families to seek the help of the police instead.
“We know their fears and concerns. But if they cooperate with us, there are chances that the cases can be solved,” said the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Jamil Johari.
The police are willing to provide 24-hour surveillance to victims’ families.
Jamil said policing in a democratic society is the most difficult form of police work, as people expected high quality services, transparency and good governance.
“We are watched, discussed and questioned by the public who are exposed to information from all around the world.
