6c                     SABAH CRIME  RATE LOWEST IN COUNTRY

According to Commissioner of Police Datuk Mamat Talib, the crimerate in Sabah went down 17.52 per cent last year.

At the same  time, Mamat said the number of crimes solved last year was 39.12 per cent, compared with 29.26 per cent in 1999.

“We are proud that the crime rate in Sabah has declined. We have the lowest crime rate in the country. We also recorded the highest number of cases solved in the country.

“This is a good sign considering that Sabah has the third  largest  population in the country. We also have the longest coastline and many illegal foreigners,”  he said.

6d                     DISAPPOINTED INDONESIANS RETURN HOME

Seventeen Indonesian women  left for home yesterday after the promise of employment here was not fulfilled.

They were part of a party of 39 who arrived in Johor Baru five days ago to take up a  job offer in an electronics factory.

To their disappointment, they were informed upon their arrival here that the factory could no longer employ them. This was due to a drop in the factory’s production.

Earlier, the women, aged 18 to 23, were elated when they first received news last September  that there were jobs available in Johor Baru. .

6e          CROCODILE  SPOTTED  ALONG RIVER IN MALACCA

A crocodile measuring more than 4 metres long has been regularly seen along the riverbanks of Sungai Rembau recently.

Villagers said the crocodile had eaten  ducks and chickens from houses close to the riverbanks.

Mini-market owner, Chua Kee Teck, 39, saw the crocodile when several villagers showed it to him yesterday.

“It was lying on the riverbank for about an hour,” he said.

Mohd Yusof  Thamby Chik, 58, a retired bank staff said, “This is not the only crocodile in the river.  There are many more in the stream where the river joins the Linggi River.”

Atan Bidin, 50, who goes fishing in the river said the crocodile could be a buaya tembaga because it had yellow spots on its enormous body.
