7a                             ELECTRIC BICYCLES

A lot of people in Singapore like to use electric bicycles nowadays. They prefer the electric bicycles to motorcycles because they are cheaper and less  tiring.

Users love it because it is easier to climb slopes compared to regular bicycles. All they have to do is switch on the battery-powered motor and they let it do all the work. If the cyclists want some exercise, they just switch off the power and start pedalling.

This vehicle, which was introduced a few years ago, can reach up to 24 kph.

A salesgirl from Ampang here had a pleasant surprise. A chicken she had been rearing over the past two years laid an egg. The surprise is the egg resembled a miniaturebowling pin.

This is the first time she had come across an egg of such shape. Now she keeps the egg, which is about 5cm long, in a bottle. She displays the bottle in her workplace. She believes that it will bring her luck.

Many curious visitors have come to view the egg. A richbusinessman has even made an offer to purchase the egg from her. However, she does not want to part with the egg.

7d                  PENANG TOPS IN NATION AS A CARING SOCIETY

Penangites should be proud that they are living in the ‘most caring society in the nation’.  No matter what age group you belong to, society is always there.  They are always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Many associations in Penang were proactive in organising various programmes for the poor and needy.

One classic example is the Senior Citizens’ Helpline. It was set up with elderly people in mind. Elderly people who live alone will find the Helpline useful. Those who fall  ill or suffer a mishap can get immediate medical attention by calling the service.

Those interested in volunteering in Helpline can contact the Senior Citizens’ Association. Training will be provided.

7e             DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY, AND LIVE LONG

Happiness can do  wonders for a person. A fantastic example is Madam Mary Lim. Last week, she celebrated her 100th birthday at a luxury hotel in Taiping. She says that her secret to longevity is to lead a happy and fulfilling life. She lives by the simple motto “Don’t worry, be happy.”

At her birthday party, she looked very contented. She was surrounded by her family members. Some had travelled  from as far as Britain and Australia to celebrate it with her.

Madam Lim also received a pleasant birthday surprise. It was a congratulatory  message from the Queen Mother of England.

Born and raised in Taiping, Madam Lim married a physician. They had four sons and four daughters. After her husband’s death, she raised her children on her own. She took up sewing and handicraft to earn extra money to support her family.
