It is a shame that only 35% of Malay students at universities are male, the Prime Minister said yesterday.
He added that if this trend continued, the women might end up being the breadwinners in the household.
“Where have the bumiputra male students gone to? Are they not interested in education? “ he asked in his opening speech at the Rida-Mara Golden Jubilee Celebrations.
Later
Dr.
Mahathir said that in a country where female and male bumiputras
were almost equal in number, this gap
at university level was alarming. Therefore, it is necessary
for the government to study the reasons for
this gender gap.

The government
is keen on building seven Vision schools under
the Seventh Malaysia Plan.
Under this concept, two or three types of schools – Malay, Chinese and Tamil - will be housed in the same compound. They will share common facilities like the field and canteen.
In this way, the government hopes to achieveunityamongthe different races in Malaysia.
Even before the Vision School Project, two schools in Penang had alreadyadopted the idea of sharing a common field and canteen. The Malay, Chinese and Indian students play and eat together daily. However, lessons are in their own vernacular language.

Beverly Yong is an art dealer who spent a great part of her life in London where the social activities revolved around theatres, galleries and museums.
‘Londoners are very much into art and they spend a lot of timebrowsing in galleries. In fact, galleries are becoming part of life in the city and are big tourist attractions.’
Yong doesn’t see why this should not happen in Malaysia where more people are beginning to show an interest in art.
She believes that Malaysia should encourage the development of local art.

FIRE RAZES MANILA SHANTY COMMUNITY
On Saturday, a dawn fire gutted a shantytown in Manila leaving more than 5,000 people homeless. At least nine people were injured, said Manila fire operations chief Captain Escoto.
Escoto said the fire spread quickly. More than 700 firefighters and 100 fire trucks helped put out the blaze. However, they were hampered by the narrow streets that were blocked by personal belongings of residents fleeing the fire. The blaze was put out by midday about five hours after it began.
The
cause
of the fire was under investigation.
