Kenja's Candidate Story

Back to Kenja's Weyr

Dreams

Kenja, an ordinary girl with 23 turns at her neck, started to walk along the corridor. Oh, she was late she knew that for shore. Her father, one of the great dolphineers was training new crafters. *I really hope he's not angry.* Kenja thought. She'd been out in the hills looking at the dragonriders training their weyrlings. "Ah, only if I were a rider..."  There it was the doorway to her fathers room. She could hear his loud voice from were she was walking. She entered. "Hi." "Kenja, how nice that you finally decided to join our little group. You're late. And it's the third time in two days!" Two of the boys was laughing silently for themselves. "I'm so sorry, I just forgot time." *May he not ask why, I can't explain coming late on looking at dragons. He'd be furious.* "Well, let's go for this time" A stone fell from Kenja's chest. "But if it happens again we'll got to have a talk." Yes, sir." Sir, she always called her father sir. Why? She didn't know, it just felt right.
The lesson went on. She were going to be a dolphineer, just like her father. She'd never liked the idea of becoming a botanist like her mother. Her brother had decided he was going to be a fisherman. No one knew why. A little boy who was son to an outstanding dolphineer and one of the greatest botanists in the area. What was he thinking? No one knew and no one asked.
Most of all Kenja wanted to be a dragonrider. Just the thought of sharing your thoughts with one creature, a creature that was so beautiful and powerful, made her smile inside. But as her father said, she was doomed to be a crafter. But in her dreams she was a rider, one that was one of the most outstanding and greatest. But that was in her dreams. In real life she was just one of the students in her fathers group that studied to be dolphineers. *Oh, if I could just fly away on my dragon to other lands were I could help those who is in need. and I and my dragon could share each feeling. Oh, if I.....*
"Kenja. Kenja?" "What?" "The lesson is over." her father said. "Oh, I must have drifted away." "On a dolphin I hope. You think to much about those dragons. You're going to be a crafter, and a damn good one to." Kenja nodded. *I don't want to be a crafter, not really. I want to be a dragonrider. I'm not the kind of girl that takes care of dolphins all day. I'm the kind of girl that rides on a dragon and defends holds and lands from Thread.* She stood up and walked out in the corridor and ran to the hills were she could sit and look at the dragons.
At the hills she sat down and turned her head towards the sky. There was a bronze one training today. He was so beautiful. and just the thought about that the gold one was even more beautiful. But she had never seen a gold one here. But, the gold ones became queens so maybe they trained somewhere else or maybe there haven't been any queen at the presence.
"Kenja! Kenja!" her mother called. "Kenja! Diners ready!" Kenja started running for home. "Coming mother! I'm coming!"

A travel to the Hold

"There you are. Where have you been?" "At the hills looking at those stupid dragons of course. Mom, I think Kenja's getting dragons on her mind. I won't be surprised if wings and horns starts to grow on her!" Kenja's younger and irritating brother shouted. "Valin stop it. Apologize to your sister." "Why?!" Kenja's brother cried. "Because I say so." "I'm sorry!" "It's okay, he's only envious." "Is not!" "Kids, kids. Calm down. Let's eat before we start a war here." So they ate. "I'm going to the Hold tomorrow. Anyone who wants to come?" "Yes!" the children said in chorus. "Can we go mom?" Valin asked. "Of course, but only if you two don't fight. I might come to. "How nice. a family trip." Borno said. "I'm tired. I think I'm going to sleep now." Kenja says. "But you have barely eaten anything!" "Mom, I'm not hungry. Beside I ate a lot to lunch."
So Kenja went to sleep, at least she tried to sleep. The last night she had problems sleeping. So she did as usual, she lied awake and thought about dragons. She knew she probably never get the chance to even candidate. And she was a girl so she would get a green one, cause she could never Impress a gold one, no she never had that kind of luck. She had heard of female blue dragons, but was it true? And if it were, they surely was very rare, like the white ones. A white dragon, a rare color. She started think about unordinary colors and suddenly she fell asleep.
The next day:
"Kenja! Time to wake up. You don't want to miss the travel to the Hold!" *THE HOLD!* Kenja has almost forgot. She put her clothes on and brushed the brown hair. *Oh, my hair is a mess. I have to do something about it.* She ran to the kitchen to eat some breakfast. And where was the rest of the family. "Mom?" "Over here!" They were out  and saddling the runners. Gronk her very best friend in the runners department was saddled by her father. "Thanks dad." she said and kissed her father on his cheek. She sat up on the runner. Then they were on their way.
After a while she could see the Hold. Gronk continued up the rocky path. Then she could see the opening that worked as a gate. The Lord Holder Falin stood inside talking to some men Kenja never seen before. The little family dismounted their runners. "Well, I have some things to do so you can go on your own now." Her father said. "Yes! I really have some stuff to check out!" Valin shouted. "Take care of your self." the mother said while her son ran away. "And what are you going to do Kenja?" "I think I'm going to visit Norsen. Hear some news." "OK. I think I'm going to look a little for some things. Can you go on your own?" "Mom, I'm going to be 23, I think I can handle myself."
She walked toward an opening in the great stone walls. Norsen worked in the kitchen and he could often hear the latest news. She got close to the kitchen. There it was. She walked inside. "Is Norsen here?" she asked a passing girl. "No, not yet. He'll be here soon. He won't miss the hatching." "The hatching?" "Yeah. One of our boys found some fire-lizard eggs and they're about to hatch. Hey, maybe you want one?" "Oh yes. But my pa..." "Fine, we need all parents we can get!" The girl grabbed Kenja's arm and pulled her to one of the fires in the kitchen. There in a bowl filled with sand she could see 8 little eggs. And nearby she could see a bowl of meat, probably for the hatchlings. The eggs looked like the ones you could find on the beach near the volcano. Those fire-lizards had a special sizes and behavior. She'd heard a lot's about them.
"Kenja! Are you here for the hatching?" a man with black hair asked her, Norsen. "Actually..." "Yes she is. She's going to Impress one." the girl said. "Oh, how fun for you. These fellows need parents you know. I'm going to Impress one to."
"They're hatching!" The girl pushed Kenja to the center of the ring. "Here." A man with big shoulders and kind eyes put an egg in her hand. It started to shake. Then a little brown head popped out of the shell. "Here, quickly, feed him." a voice said.
Kenja fed the little lizard until its belly was totally filled. And then when everything had calmed down she heard a voice. "What are you going to call him?" It was Norsen who sat down beside her. The people had spread out now, it was just a few curious eyes left that fascinated looked at the newborn fire-lizards. "I don't really now. What's your called?" "Oh, he looks like a Ranin, don't you think?" he held up the little bronze hatchling. "Well, mine looks a little like a Bernin. Bernin?" The little lizard opened one eye and looked at its mistress. "Bernin it is." "What do your parents think about this?" "Oh, I forgot. They don't know. Oh, they'll go mad when they found out." "But they can't through him out, can they?" "Now, that would be like killing him."

Conversation with a friend

"Hey, do you want to know something?" "What?" Kenja replied. "When you arrived, did you see any men? Any unusual men?" "Yes, Lord Holder Falin was talking to two men. Do you know who they are?" "In fact, I do. They're Dragonriders from Mooncrest Weyr. They are on a Search, you know." Kenja's heart skipped a beat. *Dragonriders!* "You me-me-mean that kind that ri-ri-rides on d-d-dragons?" "Yes! And they're looking for candidates for their new clutch." "Are you re-re-really sure!?" "Yes. I talked to Falin just before I arrived." Kenja looked at her friend. And suddenly she forgot the excitement over the dragonriders. "Since when do you talk to the Lord Holder?!" "Since I made him his dinner on his last birthday. He was delighted." "Oh, this is to much!" Kenja cried. "First I get a fire-lizard and then I hear that my best friend talks to the Lord Holder, and then I hear that there are dragonriders here. That's too much!" "We can skip the dragonrider-part if you like." he said and smiled. Kenja pushed him. "Don't you understand? This is the moment I've been waiting for all my life!" "In that case I think we should talk to these riders." "You just can't walk up to a dragonrider and say; Oh please can't you make me a dragonrider just like you!" "No, but we can ask them how you become a candidate." "You serious?" "Do dragons fly?" Norsen smiled and started to walk to the dinner room where he believed they could find the riders.

The Riders

"Hello Genny." Norsen said to one of the waitresses in the big dinner room. "Have you seen the riders?" "Actually I have." "And?" "And what Norsen? Oh, you want to talk to them." "Yes. Do you know where they are?" "If I tell you what do I get?" "How about 2 of my days off?" "Splendid! They are over there in the east corner." "I see them." Norsen and Kenja walked over to the riders table. "Good evening. I'm Norsen, if you remember I served you lunch earlier today." "Off course we remember." one of the riders says. "It was a delicious meal." the other one replies. "Well, this is a friend of mine. Her name is Kenja." "How nice. And what do she want with us?" "She is wondering how she can become a candidate?" The other rider looked at Kenja. "So, you want to become a rider?" Kenja's throat felt so dry she couldn't speak a word so she just nodded. "Well, first you can follow us and meet my blue dragon. He's good at see if one is fit to be a candidate. and if he does you can follow us to the Weyr where you'll get more info." "Yeah, you can meet us after dinner, at the backyard." "Oh, thank you!" Kenja said. She felt happier than she could possibly understand. "And how are you going to tell you parents the good news?" "I don't know and I don't care! I'm 22 and decides about my own life!"
With Bernin in her arms and Norsen by her side she walked out to meet her parents. They stood by the runners and was looking over today's findings. "What is that?!" her father asked her when he saw Bernin. "It's a fire-lizard and his name is Bernin." "A fire-lizard! We have talked about this. No pets!" "But dad, I couldn't help. Besides we can't just kick him out can we?" "Now we can't, he's bond to her now." her mother said. "And I'm going to a Weyr later." "A what!?" "A Weyr. I'm going to be a candidate." "No you're not. You, young lady are going to be a dolphineer." "No, I've made up my mind, and nothing can change it." "She's right. Besides we can't control her, can we. She's to old for that." "Okay. Let's go for this time. But no more wild ideas." "Oh thank you, thank you! Come Norsen we must go." So Kenja left her parents and went to the backyard. She could see two big dragons not far away. One blue and one brown. Then the riders came. "Come Kenja. It's time to go." "He likes her." The blue rider says. "He says she'll be a good candidate." "Well, that's good. The blue one here are good at judging if one will become a good candidate or not." Kenja stepped up on the brown dragon and they left the ground. She could see Norsen down there. She held Bernin close so that he wouldn't fall.
When they landed in the Weyr Kenja  she met a man who told her how to become a candidate. After a time Kenja signed in.  She didn't want to leave this place where she could see dragon's everywhere, but she decided to go home when the sun began to set. Then she sat up on the brown dragon once again and flied home.

I'm a candidate

"I'm home!" "Oh, at last. I've been waiting for you. You father and brother has gone to sleep." "I'm a bit tired my self, not to talk about Bernin." Bernin was sleeping tightly to Kenja. "Ah, he's so cute. Now tell me, how did it go?" "I'm a candidate!" "Oh, I'm so happy for you, even if your father's not." Kenja told her mother everything. And in the morning they went to the old volcano nearby to make a weyr for Kenja, Bernin and her possible dragon.
