Membership

The story so far: Selby & District Family History Group was formed in May 2001, after a short Workers’ Education Association course on family history.

It developed into a group of people researching their family trees, the more experienced of which offer help and advice to members just starting into their world of genealogy, with all the fun of finding new and interesting facts about their ancestors.

The most important event in the group’s activities came when they were awarded two grants from the Awards for All scheme (financed by the Lottery) together more recently by a grant from the Coalfields Restoration Trust. This money has been used to purchase a microfiche reader together with a substantial number of microfiche, and seven laptop computers.

No pressure is put on new members; they can work at their own pace. The important thing in joining the group is to have help available. When a member gets 'stuck', they can rely on someone with experience to be there to give advice on a way to proceed with their research.
