Selby Town Hall and Gowthorpe (Main
Street)
Selby, in North Yorkshire, is twelve miles south of York. It has a fine Abbey
that can be traced back to 1069, just three years after the Norman Conquest.
Benedict, a French monk from Auxerre, had a vision, he crossed to England and
sailed up the Ouse until he recognised the site selected for him. This was
confirmed by three swans landing on the river. Benedict raised the Cross and
constructed a simple dwelling, from which Selby grew.
