Steps to Stopping

I received an e mail asking for advice about stopping self harm and alternative coping mechanisms. This page pretty much reiterates what I have to say on the rest of this site but I thought I'd add it anyhow. It's a step by step list of tips for stopping:

  1. Get a copy of 'The Scarred Soul' by Tracy Alderman. I really recommend this book. It's a self help guide.

  2. Find a therapist / counsellor. I really think it's important to get professional help.

  3. Find a support system. This is linked up with finding a therapist. It's important to have people to talk to and support you. Make a list of who you can call or contact on each day of the week at certain times. Include friends (online & offline)  , helplines, therapist, family.

  4. Make a list of at least 10 alternatives you can do when you feel unsafe.
  5. Stock up on supplies from your alternatives list - diary, paints, craft supplies, safe books, cheerful music, positive & comforting objects, plasticine / play dough.
  6. Make a list of safe places you can go when you feel unsafe - library, friends house, park etc.
  7. Throw out / lock up / hide your self harm 'tools'
  8. Stick a star on your calendar for each day that you stay safe.
  9. Think about your future hopes and dreams. Take little steps to realise them

The Scarred Soul mentions you need to work on

  • Changing your behaviours - specifically the rituals you have when you self harm
  • Changing your negative thoughts - challenge then, stop them , reframe them.
  • Identify and express your emotions - www.imood.com is good for giving you a fun way to identify them.
