The company's products and services, which are marketed under the Bookkeeper® name, extend the useful life of paper-based materials in their original form. Life extension is achieved by treating the paper to eliminate the destructive effects of acids that remain from the paper manufacturing process and that are present in the storage environment.

The first patent for the Bookkeeper® process was developed in the early 1980s at the Koppers Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1992, Preservation Technologies, Inc., was founded by Richard Spatz and Randall Russell with a patent and a commitment that the world's paper-based heritage must be preserved. Eight years later, the company has grown significantly and has several more patents, professional and consumer products, and operations in the United States and Europe.

1997 -- The company completed its first two-year contract with the Library of Congress and secured a follow-on four-year contract. The company was positioned to expand its production capacity, research activities, and sales and marketing functions, and began to look for additional equity to fund these activities. Negotiations were completed with Seneca Capital Partners, Inc., to provide the necessary capital.

1998 -- An operating company was established in the Netherlands to address the European market.

1999 -- The company introduced two consumer products to provide its technology to the framing, scrapbook, genealogy, and stamp collecting markets. Products under the brand names of Archival Mist® and Clarity® are available in more than 1200 retail outlet, in catalogs, and over the internet.

Now -- Preservation Technologies has twice its original treating capacity and maintains contracts with more than 40 institutions in North America, including 21 of the 40 largest research libraries. Preservation Technologies is continuing to develop relationships with institutions in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Australia.
