Meekatharra takes positive community steps

Meekatharra is working on implementing positive community driven initiatives with the appointment of the town's first Community Development Officer.
Peta Turnbull took up the position this week after having spent a year in Mt Magnet working specifically with youth.
With a BA degree majoring in Psychology and a minor in justice, Miss Turnbull is looking to establish close ties with all sectors of the Meekatharra community and to bring the community closer together.
“During my time in Mt Magnet, I became familiar with the issues affecting outback communities, specifically youth,” Miss Turnbull said.

“With Meekatharra, I'll be looking to take a holistic approach to address a broad range of issues affecting the community.
“This starts by getting to know my knew community, and for them getting to know me, so we can create expectations, goals and programs that are directly relevant for Meekatharra.”
Miss Turnbull, along with Shire of Meekatharra CEO Tom Hartman hopes to establish an advisory committee made up of community representatives to help guide this process.
“But it certainly won't be all committees,” she said. “What we need is action and programs that bring tangible benefits for the Meekatharra community.”
Miss Turnbull sited mentoring for at risk youth as just one of the programs that could be considered.

Miss Turnbull's appointment is just one of a range of initiatives the Shire of Meekatharra is currently progressing. Other programs include a major streetscape project to beautify the town, walkways to open up tourist attractions and the Safer WA Expo.
