Men and Sex…….unexplored territory ?
While many men find it easy to boast about in the pub after a few beers, sex is not something easily discussed when there is a problem. In fact until the recent deluge of pharmaceutical companies promoting their wonder drugs, men sexual health problems didn't seem to exist. In light of these revelations, Perth Central Coastal Division of General Practice in association with Andrology Australia and Monash University Department of General Practice embarked on an ambitious project aimed at educating local GPs of the key areas in men's sexual and reproductive health.
PCCDGP is one of the first divisions in Western Australia to run the sessions and has found this area has been neglected for some time and there is genuine need for education in this area.Dr Tom Brett was one of the original group of 30 General Practitioners who attended the National 'Train the Trainer' course at Monash University.
Tom has an ongoing clinical research interest in men's health specifically prostate cancer and facilitated the sessions. The sessions were made up of two consecutive two-hour meetings covering Male Infertility "Antho-pause”, Androgen Replacement, Testicular Cancer, Prostate Cancer and Erectile Dysfunction.
Dr David Hurley an Endocrinologist based at Royal Perth Hospital and Dr Tom Shannon a Urologist at Hollywood Private Hospital passed on their expertise and provided the group with interesting case studies.Overall the Men's health meetings were a resounding success with 37 general Practitioners attending, and many requests for more meetings to be held.
Thanks to Pfizer, Hollywood Private Hospital and Astrazeneca for their support which enabled us to run the much appreciated sessions.
