The Peel Region…..Demographics

The Peel Region in located immediately south of Perth, and is comprised of the City of Mandurah and the Shires of Boddington, Murray, Serpentine-Jarrahdale, and Waroona. The Peel Police District is made up of six police stations being Boddington, Dwellingup, Mundijong, Mandurah, Pinjarra and Waroona.

The Peel Police District comprises one of the fastest growing regions in Australia. In June 2001, the estimated population in the region was 76,400 people, making it one of the most heavily populated regions in Western Australia. Figures published by the Department of Planning and Infrastructure indicated that the region would grow at a rate of 5.2% each year. The population increase between 2000 and 2001 was actually 5.47%, equating to 3965 residents over a 12-month period. (State and National growth rates are 1.3%)
The region covers 5651 square kilometres; the waterways cover an area of 133 km2 and there is 74 km of coastline. Resource development in the early 1970s has seen tremendous population growth in Mandurah and nearby towns. The region is Western Australia's largest producer of alumina, and has a substantial economic growth consisting of mining, tourism, forestry, agriculture, fishing and equine industries. The region has also recently been declared as a wine growing and producing region with its burgeoning viticulture industry.

Policing Issues

Although Peel Police District is small geographically; it is the most populated region outside the metropolitan area. Mandurah is the largest city outside the metropolitan area in Western Australia with a resident population of 52,000 people. This figure can increase to 100,000 plus on a daily basis, with the importation of 'day trippers' and 'holiday makers' who visit the area from Perth and surrounding districts.
Consistent with our business approach and mindful of our obligation to effectively service the needs of our culturally diverse community, Peel Police resources have been strategically placed throughout the district to create the right balance. In striving to achieve our combined goals, the district is focusing heavily on community support and crime prevention, maintaining good public order, traffic management and road safety, and the apprehension of offenders.
Peel Traffic Unit staff numbers have recently been increased and a Multanova Camera with three operators has been permanently based in the Peel Police District. The camera and the extra staff will enhance the ability of Peel Police to target offending road users.

With the extension of the Kwinana Freeway, completed to Safety Bay Road just north of Mandurah, the Bus Transit Station now completed and the new rapid railway link between Perth and Mandurah expected to be complete by 2007, the region will become increasingly accessible to the metropolitan area.
Additionally the Mandurah Ocean Marina "South Harbour" is well under construction and scheduled for completion by 2004. The first stage, "North Harbour" was finished in 2001 and all residential, commercial and tourism sites have been sold. The marina is expected to generate approximately $900 million in economic benefits and hundreds of jobs over the next 10 to 20 years.

Future changes to the Peel Region through continued development will place further demands on the policing resources of the District. To enhance policing, partnerships have been formed with government agencies, local government businesses, Aboriginal organisations and the community through such initiatives as Safer WA, Emergency Management Committees and other community focussed initiatives.

Peel Police District is committed to providing a safe and secure environment.
