The Senior Divino Tesoro Story

Francisco Paramio listen to reason that slowly took shape in his mind while Tomas, the "aguacil" or peace officer sent by the Gobernadorcillo explained the latter's order to persuade him to give up possession of the crucified Jesus image.

The childless widower had cherished the image for ten years-his only companion and friend in his sad and solitary life.

The Gobernadorcillo wanted the image of Senior Divino Tesoro to be moved from Franciscos hut to the "Tribunal" or municipal Hall after learning of how, after a very strong storm hit the town of Calasiao just a few days before, the widower's hut was miraculously spared from damage apart from his neighbors whose more durably-built houses were wiped out.

The year was 1837 during the administration of a certain Kapitan Domingo Corpuz.

It was a carpenter, Joaquin Fernandez who took a keen interest in the mystery of Senior Divino Tesoro and later on recounted how he secretly planned to take possession of the image which he believed could benefit him, but each time he intended to execute his plans, his concience would bother him--as if a voice, not his own, would whisper something to him, requesting that he should leave the image alone.

Such were the stories that spread quietly around the neighborhood and finally convincing the Gobernadorcillo to elevate the Senior Divino Tesoro as patron of Calasiao, to be installed temporarily at the Tribunal.

Francisco Paramio agreed and the image became public property, honored, worshipped and venerated at the municipal hall by the religious townsfolk of Calasiao. But The image needed repainting, after years of serving as sole companion of an old widower who loved the Senior Divino Tesoro but didnt have the means to preserve it materially as he was satisfied by its spiritual blessings.

In those days, the only qualified experts in repainting and preserving religious icons would be found in Manila, and so the image of Senior Divino Tesoro was transported by locomotive via Dagupan where the railroad station was located.

When it was time to return the re-painted icon, again it was transported via the railroad and from the station in Dagupan, a carabao-drawn "careton" was used to carry it back to Calasiao.

About a half kilometer away from the town proper, as the story goes, the carabao suddenly went wild overthrowing the cart driver who was unable to catch up with the carabao who ran as fast as he could, still carrying the image of Senior Divino Tesoro.

What made the incedent even more incredible was the fact that the carabao seemed to know where he would deliver the icon, taking a shorter route in fact through an off-road way passing by a school building close to the munipal hall. The particular site is presently where the basketball court is located and anyone who is familiar with the spot would know that it is indeed a short cut.

After the incident, construction of a chapel for the Senior Divino Tesoro was started, a series of mishaps occured before work was pursued, with a laborer meeting his death in a freak accident and later on, another strong storm hit Calasiao, this time blowing away the entire roofing of the chapel that was still being completed.

The project was discontinued and the faithfuls learned to accept the fact that the Senior Divino Tesoro had chosen the Tribunal as his permanent abode.

It would take volumes of books to diligently chronicle the numerous attributed to Senior Divino Tesoro as told and retold by devotees and non-devotees alike whose lives were touched by the Senior Divino Tesoro through the years.

The fearsome conflagration that occured during the Japanese occupation in World War II era at the poblacion of Calasiao was one such amazing event recorded in the towns history.

Devotees of the Senior Divino Tesoro invoking the supernatural powers of their patron decided to move the icon in such a way that it would face the areas where the big fire was eating up a number of houses. All of a sudden the wind change course, saving the remaining houses that would have been burned had the wind maintained its former direction.

Sometime during World War II at mid-day a conflagration was raging violently in the Poblacion. The image at that time was temporarily moved to the Roman Catholic church for the offering of a thanksgiving mass, a devotee of the image thought of bringing out the image with the assistance of other people. The image on its carriage was made to face the western side of the church ( Now Tesoro Street) direction of the area where the fire was fast spreading towards a cluster of residential houses. Suddenly as if an unseen wall had acted as a barrier and had made the wind veered and changed its direction. The fire was place under control immediately saving plenty of families from being rendered homeless.

During the landing of American Liberation Forces in 1945 there was a continuous barrage of a tillery shelling and air bombings showered along coastal areas of Lingayen gulf reaching the Municipality of Calasiao. The municipal hall where the Senior Divino Tesoro image was sheltered remained unscatched despite bombs all around except for an artillery missile that tore through the roofing and got embedded in the ground without actually exploding Bombs that fell the explode in the vicinity of Poblacion killed some people.

During the early part of martial law and under the Ugay administration a concrete cantilever roofing was made in the stage of the plaza infront of the municipal building to temporary house the image of Senior Divino Tesoro but wonders of wonders for a day or two before the transfer of the image, the finished concrete structure collapsed in a slow motion manner. After a couple of months with only a handful of financial resources realized from the Town Fiesta that had passed and from the money donations of the faithful devotees of the holy image, Mayor Feliciano E. Ugay with the help of the late Architect Felixberto T. Guillen who offered his architectural knowledge for free begun the progressive construction of the new and present Senior Divino Tesoro Shrine and finally finished to its present grandeur by the administration of Mayor Camelito T. Sison and Mayor Felipe P. De Vera, Jr., and under the presidency of Mrs. Lourdes S. Fernandez of the Senior Divino Tesoro.

Today, the shrine is undergoing massive improvement in order to meet and suit the needs of the changing time.

The town suffered much from the killer earthquake of July 16, 1990, (4:23 p.m. of the daylight savings time of President Corazon C. Aquino).

The Roman Catholic Church and its belfry were destroyed: The Calasiao Public Market and the Gabaldon Building of the Calasiao Central Pilot School were totally damage beyond repair; many buildings and houses were not spared from the havocs brought by the earthquake but the Municipal Building where the Seņor Divino Tesoro Shrine is located and which is within the faultline of the earthquake was spared.

Many devotees can bear witness to the many graces and answers to prayers received by them which are considered miraculous in nature through the aid of Seņor Divino Tesoro, so numerous and varied and so widespread are the rewards of the devotion of the divine image that many people from far and near including Manila, flock to Calasiao to worship Seņor Divino Tesoro, our Lord Jesus Crucified.

It is on this context and because the Town Fiesta of our Patron Saints, Sts. Peter and Paul is celebrated on June 28-29 wherein the Town of Calasiao is almost and always flooded that the feast of Seņor Divino Tesoro on May 2-3 was celebrated as the town's fiesta and as a merry making to give due respect, honor and thanksgiving to God Almighty for the years' bountiful blessings and harvest.
