Policeman: ...now then Mrs.
Ena: Sharples! Policeman: Aye well we can't have this Mrs. Sharples, you're in breach of all the bi-laws. Ena: Hey, this young lad says we're breaching his bi-laws! Policeman: What I'm pointing out is you can't do it and that's that, nobody can sit in the road disrupting traffic on one of't Queen's Highways. |
In 1969 Richard landed his first TV job with a cameo role as a policeman in Coronation Street in which he had to hide his long hair under a policeman's helmet. He played the part of PC Wilcox of Tile Street Police Station, and arrested Ena Sharples during a sit-in she had organised against plans to demolish the pensioners' club room to make way for a car park. Always the nice lad, he let her off with a caution.
This appearance apparently led to Jack Rosenthal casting him with Paula Wilcox in The Lovers the following year.
Sister Paula Yates:
"When he was on Coronation Street he was on for about two or three minutes, but everybody was so excited, and he had long hair and I remember him saying that under this policeman's helmet he had to wear a hair net because his hair was long. All you saw was Richard carrying off Ena Sharples but it was really quite something then, it was quite exciting"
I currently have no more information on this production and would appreciate any facts anyone can provide about it... especially anyone who knows where I can get hold of a copy. |
