FILM REVIEW November 1973, Vol. 23, No. 11

Hello, young lovers with problems!

Yes, both Geoffrey (Richard Beckinsale) and Beryl (Paula Wilcox) seem to have something to ponder over in this film, but you can't take it too seriously. In The Lovers! Richard and Paula not only enlarge their television series to fill the big screen, the laughter content is increased in roughly the same ratio!

Richard has the part of Geofrey, a 20-year-old bank clerk living with his parents in Manchester. He has heard all about the Permissive Society, is heartily in favour of it, and is eager to become a member at the earliest possible opportunity. Paula has the role of 19-year-old Beryl, whose mother worries all the time because her daughter, far from being married, doesn't even have a boy friend - a matter that hasn't entirely escaped the notice of Beryl herself. You will be quite right in assuming that Beryl and Geoffrey are not long before they meet each other, but don't expect a love-at-first-sight reaction leading to live-happily-ever-after. While the various situations create lots of laughs, the course of true love in this British Lion comedy runs anything but smoothly.
