McCall's tells all

maureen's blessing in disguise

MAUREEN COX WAS JUST A 16-year-old junior assistant in a hair salon in Liverpool in 1963 when Ringo Starr (Richard Starkey) noticed her in a crowd of girls at the Cavern Club. They married in 1965, and the couple's first son was born the same year, followed by another son two years later and a daughter two years after that.

The marriage became strained as Ringo's fame grew. Maureen's successive pregnancies and the growing number of women running after her husband made her insecure about her looks. After nine years of marriage, Maureen still wanted to be Ringo's wife despite his infidelities, but he felt differently. Ringo asked his lawyers to persuade her to file for divorce on the grounds of his affair with an actress.

"Whatever happened between Rich [Ringo] and me, he's been a good father to our kids."

For the past four years Maureen has been married to Isaac Tigrett, a 42-year-old Tennessee-born millionaire who originally owned the Hard Rock Cafe chain (he once described his wife as "my greatest piece of rock 'n' roll memorabilia">. "I'm happy with my life now," she says. "I've learnt to be contented. I've matured." Even though Maureen was already a grandmother, she gave birth to Isaac's daughter, Augusta King, six years ago. The family now lives in Los Angeles and also has a home in Boston, where Isaac opened the restaraunt House Of Blues last year.

She and her husband lead an exciting life. They're friends with actor Dan Ackryd and his wife, Donna Dixon, and they travel across the country on their own train, which boasts three bedrooms, several bathrooms, a sitting room and a kitchen. "It was Isaac's grandfather's own train, which has been carefully restored, and we now hook it onto the bak of an Amtrak and travel across America." says Maureen. "What a way to go!"
