PORRIDGE/GOING STRAIGHT

The action in Porridge takes place amongst the inmates of Slade Prison, and centers around Ronnie Barker's character Norman Stanley Fletcher who is embarking on his latest five year stretch.

Richard plays his new cellmate Lennie Godber who's a little "wet behind the ears," new to prison life and is soon taken under Fletcher's wing. Godber is a friendly, helpful lad who ends up joining in with nearly all the prison activities such as working in the kitchens and taking part in any sport. He also ends up lending his cellmate whatever luxuries he gets his hands on, helping out with his scemes and darning his socks, but never gets anything material in return. Instead he gets Fletcher's valuable guidance and protection at all times.

Ingrid: Who's the boy?
Fletcher: Eh? Oh, that's Godber, Lennie Godber. He's my temporary cellmate. He comes from Birmingham but he has got an O level in geography.
Ingrid: Oh.
Fletcher: Well, you need one to find your way round Birmingham, you know what I mean.

The series was followed by a spin off called Going Straight which took place on the outside, and involved Godber determined to go straight and eventually marry Fletcher's daughter Ingrid played by Patricia Brake.
