Elite Institute,
Apgujeong-dong
Seoul, Korea
Since
the beginning of April, 2001, I've enjoyed the privilege of teaching some fantastic
Korean & Korean-American kids at Elite Institute, Apgujeong-dong, in
Seoul, Korea. These students are certainly among the hardest-working,
brightest, & most ambitious students in the world! Typically, they start their
school days as early as 8 a.m. and attend their Korean schools until
mid-afternoon. Then they're off to their institutes (such as Elite
Institute, for example) where they study English, Math, and SAT Prep for a
few hours. Then they get music, art or Taekwondo lessons until evening. Before they can go to bed and get
to sleep, many of them also have
2 or 3 hours of homework to complete.
My
students range from Grade 2 elementary students to senior high school
students who are preparing to write the SAT and gain admittance to
Harvard, Yale, Princeton, or some other highly touted university. Because
our institute is located in the "Beverly Hills District" of
Seoul, most of our students come from very affluent families who are very
keen on the idea of perpetuating their prosperity by making sure their
kids get the best education available. Thus, parental input is a
major consideration when selecting textbooks and planning class
activities.
Class
sizes are ideal: an average of 4 students per class, with a maximum of 10
(which is rare). We also have some private one-on-one tutorial sessions
for students who really need individualized programs.
When it comes to teaching these students,
perhaps the best thing of all is the fact that they respect themselves,
their peers, and their teachers.
What a refreshing
breeze!!!!!!
