Personality Summary: Hotaru enters the Sailor Moon scene in Season 3 as a young girl of 13. She lives in a mansion with her scientist father, Professor Tomoe, who ends up being the brains behind the Witches 5 - the new baddies in town. Needless to say, this leads to Hotaru being a bit of an odd child. Her mother died in an explosion when she was younger and her father pays more attention to his test tubes than to her. To his credit, however, he is being possessed by the power of Pharah 90 and can't help himself. Hotaru, herself, becomes "possessed" (I use this term loosely because it isn't so much that she is possessed as she is influenced by negative energy) and grows in Mistress 9. The one thing that everyone must know about Hotaru is her ability to grow up at a rapid rate. Her powers as Sailor Saturn are so powerful (she can destroy entire worlds) that they remain dormant in her until they are needed. When they sense that they are needed, then they age Hotaru until she is old enough to handle the mantle of Sailor Saturn. Since, in the anime she starts out too young to be Sailor Saturn, her powers jump her to age 16 overnight. In this same way, the powers of Mistress 9 age her to what looks like 20 or so (Don't worry, Sailor Moon risks her life and her own powers to save Hotaru from Mistress 9's grip - to learn more, see my summary of Season 3). When Hotaru is just being Hotaru, though, she is a very sweet tempered girl. She's quite, passive, unsure of herself and doesn't really know how to interact with others too well (it doesn't help that her dad basically locks in the mansion at all hours and that Kaolinite is her "step mom"). After meeting Chibi Usa, who becomes her fast friend, she breaks out of her shell a bit and turns out to be a very cute, fun girl. Eventually, in Season 5 (after being reborn via Sailor Moon's healing), she is adopted by Michiru and Haruka (does it count as adoption when a baby is taken from her loving father's arms?) and lives with them as well as Aunt Setsuna. It is here that her other powers become known...she has visions, prothetic ones. This only adds to the mystery that constantly surrounds her character.
Love Life: None, though many people think that her close friendship with Chibi Usa is more than just friends (I don't agree with this in the anime version because Chibi Usa is set up to be the soulmate of Helios...HOWEVER, in the manga version it very much seems as though Chibi Usa and Hotaru have the beginnings of a lesbian relationship).
