A Story by Peppercorn
Long ago, the land was completely flat. No hills or mountains existed like we have today. The ground was smooth and soft, void of lumps or rocks. But also the land was hot. The only shelter you could find were the trees. There were no caves, how could there be without a mountain for an entrance? The land was so hot that a great king, named Grandolf Heartrider, sent three of his wisest from his court to fix the problem. The oldest from the court, Raven, the middle aged of the court, Sparrow, and the youngest from the court, Pigeon, all went forth to try and solve the king's problem. Raven came across an old woman one day while searching and asked of her where she was going. "To seek the shelter of the trees, for I am so hot and the sun is so cruel." Raven in her pity for the old woman dug up the dirt and made a small mound for the woman to stand next to in order to block the sun. It worked so well that Raven went from place to place building these mounds everywhere. These are now called hills. Sparrow on the other hand came across a giant while traveling and asked him where he was going. "I am in search of the trees, for the hills are too small to shade me from the sun." Sparrow took pity on the giant and began to dig, piling the earth high she finally made a sizeable mound to give cover to the giant. Spanning the everywhere, except a few places, she did this. These today are our mountains. Now you might ask, "how does Pigeon come into all of this?" Pigeon did not make the hills; she did not make the mountains. While traveling Pigeon came across a child that had wondered from home and was trapped in the roasting hot sun. Pigeon taking pity on the poor child dug holes and tunnels in the mountains and hills creating caverns and caves. She sheltered the child there till well and returned the child home to her king. For saving the woman, the king gave Raven a robe that withstood hard thunderstorms. For saving the giant, the king gave Sparrow a sword of gold. But to little Pigeon, for saving his adopted son he gave his heart. The two were married the next day and all were happy.
