The tale which I am about to relate to you has no particular significance. It did not change the world for good or bad, and it did not cause the fall of a kingdom or the rise of an empire. It is in fact a rather simple tale, and certainly a rather strange one. It is here for the telling because it is a part of the history of Evendarr, and I hope that it will be informative to those who read it.
In the evening of the 9th day of March in the year 602, I was sitting in the tavern with my friend DeMeara, an elven scholar like myself. However, while I choose to cast my spells using the power of the earth, she chooses to cast using the power of the sky. It had been a slow evening to that point, and despite the excellent entertainment that had been provided in the way of story and song, both DeMeara and myself were beginning to yearn for adventure. There is, after all, only so long an adventurer can sit around the tavern before they become bored and must go seek questing.
The first quest that we heard of was an opportunity to travel to the plane of death. This did not seem to be a very appealing option to me, but DeMeara thought it sounded like fun, so I went with her to investigate it. We ran into one of our more experienced friends outside the tavern, and he explained the plane of death to us. He told us that the plane of death was essentially where the creatures do nothing but grant intruders the gift of death. After hearing this, DeMeara decided to reconsider, and so we ended up opting not to travel to the plane of death.
Still, though, we were searching for a quest of some type to go on. We discovered a hole in the wall which led to a den of spiders, but unfortunately the den had already been cleared out. We discovered a back door to the tavern, but that was somewhat less than exciting. Finally, while standing around in the tavern, we heard someone recruiting for an adventure. We went up to her and asked if we might accompany her on her adventure, and she said that she would be happy to have us.
The leader of our trip, and the person who had invited us to come, was a powerful healer known as Lorien, who possessed life spells as well a sword and shield, which she was able to use to great effectiveness. Also in our group were a fighter who used a single one-handed sword and a harmonicist. DeMeara and I rounded out the five that would be going on the quest.
We travelled quickly to the building we were seeking. When we walked inside, we discovered a room cluttered with junk. It was everywhere. Every corner was piled high with items that could be described as nothing else besides rubbish. Unfortunately, some of the rubbish was alive. Several giant stuffed animals got up and began to attack us. We managed to defeat them and we pressed on to discover a hallway, and when we got through the hallway we came out into a room with a giant teddy bear.
The teddy bear explained to us that she was the leader of the stuffed animals, and she was at war with the sock monster, who lived on the other side of the building. She begged for our help in defeating the sock monster, and so we told her that we would accompany her to his lair and attempt to work out a peace deal. Reassured, she agreed to journey with us.
We were attacked by many of the sock monster's troops as we moved through the next few rooms and hallways. They generally were fairly easy to defeat, though, and we made it through without taking too much damage. Finally, we came to the lair of the sock monster. He informed us that the teddy bear was a liar and that it was in fact her who was attacking him, and not the other way around. It became apparent to us fairly soon that there could never really be peace between these two. We negotiated with them extensively, for a period of approximately five minutes. Eventually, it was decided that the two of them would pinky swear that they would not attack each other anymore. The sock monster also conceded us safe passage through his territory, and so we brought the teddy bear back to her home.
When we arrived back at the teddy bear's home, we were attacked by a couple rogue troops of the sock monster. We re-assured the teddy bear by telling her that these troops were simply rogue troops, and not evidence that the sock monster had broken his agreement. She asked us to escort her back to the room we had found her in, and we kindly obliged.
What we found, though, when we got back to the teddy bear's room, was that she had several of her friends waiting for us. She thanked us for our help, and then her and her friends grew fangs and attacked us. They fought ferociously, and we were barely able to protect ourselves. We managed to take down the teddy bear's helpers, but the teddy bear herself was another matter. She managed to take down the harmonicist and DeMeara, and I dived for cover behind the shield of Lorien. Lorien, though, was more of a healer than a fighter, and was having trouble holding up against the onslaught of the teddy bear. I glanced over to the floor and realized that my downed comrades would need help soon. I cast a cure serious wounds on Lorien, and that allowed her to hold up for a little longer. We were still being pushed across the room, though, and the teddy bear showed no signs of weakening. I asked the other two who were still up if a Bind spell would work on the teddy bear, and I noticed the teddy bear recoil in fear. Taking this as a sign that the teddy bear could be affected by magic, I threw a Bind spell which pinned her arms to her side. She tried to run away, but the fighter who used just a sword caught her and finished her off.
We brought our two companions back up with healing spells, and then we proceeded to leave the building, confident that the war had been solved now that the teddy bear was dead. The sock monster would now rule, but we were okay with that. Overall, I can only describe the adventure as a most curious encounter.
