Several weeks ago, I made my way down to the land of
Therendry, a Duchy of Evendarr, in order to do some
research. Actually, let me rephrase that. Several
weeks ago, I sent my friend Mondell Xarik, a biata
fighter, down to Therendry to do some research for me.
However, it was not long before I received a message
from Mondell saying that he was in trouble and needed
my assistance. I then journeyed down to Therendry,
both to do the research and to find Xarik.
Unfortunately, I never found Xarik. Just as
unfortunately, I never found the information I was
looking for. However, I did find a war. The good
people of Therendry were revolting against the false
Duke and his partner, an evil Countess. As I tend to
do, I quickly picked sides and became involved. As
you can probably guess, I sided with the rebels.
The rebels were led by Sir Valoric and his skilled
squire Zug. While I greatly respected Sir Valoric and
Squire Zug, though, I took up more of a friendship
with a Lady of Draelonde named Lady Tenshi. She
helped explain to me a lot of what had been going on
in Therendry recently, and put the war in perspective
for me. In exchange, I told her stories of Avendale
and Ravenholt. In particular, she was interested in
the story of Wraith, the Avendale fugitive, as he had
come to the central part of Evendarr before and she
had met him.
There were many battles fought over the course of the
day on Saturday, and certainly some were more
difficult than others. One battle against a being
called a Beholder was extremely difficult, but, mostly
through the might of Squire Zug's blade, we managed to
defeat it.
Finally, sometime in the evening on Saturday I was
told that we would be storming the false Duke's
fortress and attempting to destroy him and end the
war. I, of course, was eager to help, given how much
I hate evil dictators.
We first got a being to create a gate which would
transport the entire town into the Duke's fortress.
There was some scattered resistance when we got there,
but not much, and it was quickly disposed of. We
quickly moved into a gatehouse, which would allow us
access into the inner part of the castle where the
false Duke was hiding.
The gatehouse, though, was heavily defended, and not
all that large. All of the members of the town could
not fit inside it at once, so some had to stay
outside, standing guard. The most dangerous being we
had to fight inside the gatehouse was called a blue
hoardling. It has massive powers, and took a long
time to take down. Actually, now that I come to think
of it, all of the defenders of the gatehouse took a
long time to take down. The main reason we were able
to defeat them was pure firepower. The town had four
casters throwing magic storms, six or seven archers
firing arrows, and a front line of fighters hacking at
the gatehouse guards. I have never seen more debris
flying around in my life than I saw in that battle.
Fortunately, it was eventually enough to take down the
defenders of the gatehouse, and even the blue
hoardling eventually fell.
We were then trapped inside the gate house as the
doors behind us shut themselves, but fortunately we
eventually managed to find our way out through another
door, and we were in to the inner sanctum of the
fortress. This was where the battle got really ugly.
Even I was forced to constantly use my sword to keep
the attackers off of me, as we just got repeatdely
swarmed by the defenders of the fortress.
Fortunately, after a long, hard battle across the
field, which exhausted many life spells, we managed to
force our way to the door which led to the false
Duke's chamber.
One of our celestial casters destroyed both of the
doors magically, and we could finally see inside.
Inside, we saw the false Duke himself, the Countess, a
blue hoardling, and several tough looking guards. We
prepared to fight them, but then realized that more
guards were circling around behind us again. While
the lesser experienced adventurers of the town held
off the new guards coming at us, I fought alongside
Sir Valoric, Squire Zug, Lady Tenshi, and many of the
more experienced adventurers of town against the
people inside.
At one point, though, I look inside, and noticed that
the blue hoardling was missing. I turned to Lady
Tenshi and mentioned that the hoardling was missing,
and not three seconds later it came storming around
behind us, tearing into our rear forces. The fact
that magic was required to damage it and only very few
of us had magic weapons was of course a difficulty.
We next attempted to push into the room again, but the
false Duke and his forces had us pretty well stopped
in place. Sir Valoric managed to break through, but
he was taken down and dragged behind the enemy line.
Squire Zug called that we needed to get through to
rescue Sir Valoric, but just then he was taken down as
well. We kept healing the front line of fighters, but
we were out of life spells, and preciously low on
resources.
Finally, though, we managed to take down the false
Duke, and the line began to crumble around him. We
went in to try to save Sir Valoric, but it was too
late. He had been put into a Circle by the Countess,
and there was nothing we could do about it.
Sir Valoric ended up resurrecting that day, along with
a fair number of other adventurers, almost all of them
young adventurers. We did, however, manage to defeat
the false Duke and his ally the Countess, and from
what I hear, order has been restored and all is well
in Therendry once again. And that would be a happy
ending, if it wasn't for the fact that Xarik is still
missing and I never did find the information I needed.
