The Undead That Wouldn't Stay Dead

For a couple of gatherings now in Neridia, myself and my companion Kabaka have been searching for an ancient sword. Now, I do not know as much about this sword as Kabaka does, so I cannot comment much on its exact nature, but it seems to be very powerful.

At the last Neridia gathering, Kabaka took a group of people to search for a map which would get us the first part of the Sword. His group did manage to find the map, but had to wait until the timing was right to go in after the sword itself.

Kabaka, though, knew he was leaving town, so he gave the map to me before he went, and asked me to bring the same group in again to go after the sword. I told him that I would do so, but that my only request was that I wished to allow my friend Lili to come along. Kabaka and I haggled over this point for a little while, but eventually I won out, and he agreed that Lili could come on the adventure.

It took me a long time, though, to find the dwarves who were supposed to lead us into the cavern, as they were the only ones who knew when it would be unguarded, and so were necessary to the expedition. When I finally found them, I gathered up a group consisting of Kabaka, who was back by then, Draco, Onida, Saphire, Zoku, MacGregor, and Lili to accompany me in to find the sword.

I promised Lili that she could act as the primary healer for the mission, and that I would take a backseat, because I think such experience is valuable, and it was a good opportunity for her to learn. I decided that I would act as a fighter, because it is one of my more foolish tendencies that I consistently try to use my weapon where I should be using spells.

The undead that attacked us were unlike any I had ever seen before, and things quickly spiraled out of control. They shambled at us, barely able to move, missing major parts of their bodies, but when you knocked them down, they got right back up again. Before long, I noticed that Lili had gone down, and I decided to step up my attack. I got Lili back up, and then began pumping healing into people, unintentionally taking over as primary healer for the mission due to the circumstances.

As we fought deeper into the cavern, finally we found a necromancer who we believed may have been responsible for the deformed undead. I tried to get to him, but the shambling undead blocked my path. It was especially problematic because you might think an undead was down, but they would get back up and start pelting your leg with their weapon. Finally I learned to take nothing for granted.

At one point in the battle, Draco went down, and when he got back up he came after me. I tried awakening him, but it had no effect. Realizing that he was undead, I took him down with some help from Kabaka, and then lifed and healed him. The necromancer appeared confused, as he had been confident that there were no life spells floating around.

At this point, I decided the necromancer had to be dealt with, and so I went right after him, slipping through the line of undead to do so. Lili hit him with a destroy undead spell, but it had no effect. Realizing that he was in fact alive, I began pelting him with my spear many, many times, and eventually he succumbed to it. As he went down, most of the undead seemed to lose their will to fight, and finally remained down.

We did manage to find a fragment of the sword, but we are still searching for the other pieces. We hope that the dwarves will eventually give us more clues. And we hope that we don't have to fight the undead that won't die again.
