When Ayame was younger, around episode 83 and 84, you find out that Ayame had been given a quest of sorts by her granpa. It was her training that almost killed her - she was supposed to get the shoubu flower (the iris also known as the rainbow flower.) (Aiyee! Coincidence! IRIS!) Because of this, she accidentally had a run in with Gokurakuchou - mortal enemies with all wolf tribes. She ran away from them and hid inside a tree; they however found her and suddenly Kouga saved her from the death's jaws. He carries Ayame on his back to safety, at the same time chatting to one another. Kouga and Ayame also talk about how she is leaving to go to the northern mountains for more of her training. Kouga then proposes to her rather bluntly, in the way we all love^^ HehXD
Kouga: Don't overstrain yourself. And if you can't handle it, then I'll take you as my wife, Ayame.
Ayame: Really?
Kouga: Yes, if you come down from the mountains that is.
As they walk up the mountain together, Ayame spots the moon's rainbow and they both look at it. It was the moon rainbow on which Kouga made his promise to Ayame - that he would marry her.
It's because of Kouga's words, Ayame says that she was able to keep up with her Granpa's training and stay on the northern mountains. But later, when she grows up and leaves the mountains to find Kouga, she confronts him about the proposal. However, he says he doesn't remember anything about it and refuses to marry Ayame when she asks. Kagome urges Kouga to remember about the promise he made to Ayame. In fact, he does remember it, but he still denys that he ever did see a rainbow. Ayame leaves telling Kouga that she'll take care of the tribe situation herself and that only she can be Kouga's wife.
Later Kouga is standing near a river looking at the reflection of the moon rainbow from the water.
This is what he says to her - "I have no intention of losing to Naraku. Once I get my revenge, there's no assurance that I'll even be alive. Forget about the moon and the rainbow, Ayame."
