Fabric Rug

Hi Bonnie,I don't know if anyone answered your question about how close the squares should be on the fabric rug, but here are the instructions I have from a demo on how to make these rugs:
Rug from Polyester or Wool squares by Ruth Whitenack.
Fabric list:
Denim, large enough piece for the rug you wish to make (thisi s the backing) Wool or polyester material cut into 2" squares (you can also use knits) Straight edge, quilters ruler is good for marking
1. Mark lines, lengthwise, on the light side of denim, 3/4"apart at the same time taking into consideration any design you wish to use in the rug, such as border, or lines of different colors.
2. Sew on the material squares after folding in half with grain or diagonally.
3. If you are sewing the squares folded diagonally, overlap the squares slightly. If you are sewing the squares folded in half, but them up against each other.
4. On the wool, to cut down on fraying of the fabric, cut the squares on a bias.
5. On the diagonally folded squares, do the whole row with points facing you. Then the next row reverses the direction of the pointed side.
6. For each square foot of rug, you will need approx.. 200squares. If you are figuring your rug by inches, just take the length X width in inches and divide by 144 for the square footage.
7. To care for the rug, wash in cold or warm water and air dry.
8. To avoid slippage when the rug is on the floor, use a backing or gripper, available from most home and garden stores.
I think I may just have to make one of these for my cats too. They would catch all the litter very well and then Icould just take it outside and shake it out.
