Facings in Vest
Rowena
> Someone asked me to make some children's vests for them but did notgive me enough material to make facings with. Is their a way to just line the vests and still make them sturdy enough to place buttons and buttonholes? May I put fusible interfacing into the outside fabric of the front portion of the vest and just line the whole vest with lining???
this is exactly how I make vests, fully lined, there are two good methods, the first method is called bagging: cut the lining the same as the vest. Join the vest fronts to the vest backs at the shoulders; do the same for the lining. Don't stitch the side seams yet. You can interface any part you think needs support, but I usually skip interfacing.
Lay the vest on the lining, right sides together. Stitch the vest to the lining at the front edges and neck; around the armholes; and across the lower back, still leaving the side seams unsewn. trim the seam allowances and grade. Turn the vest right side out by reaching in thru one of the open back side seams and pulling both lower fronts out thru the same opening. Pin the vest together at the side seams, matching the armhole seamlines and the lower edge, keeping the lining free. Stitch as far around as you can, then finish the seam by hand.
The second method is even quicker: stitch the vest together at shoulders and sides, do the same for the lining. Put the lining inside the vest, wrong sides together, matching seamlines. Bind the edges with bias tape. babalu!
