Roll-up baby chair
Victoria The Secret WorkshopI am new to the list but have been enjoying all the comments and information there is out there. What did we all do before the Internet and email - maybe sew more! I have three small children and sew basically everything for them. This includes snowsuit and swimsuits (I don't do underwear or sock!) I love sewing for them!
I am going to try to explain my pattern for a portable high-chair. It may not in the end make any sense. This highchair is to be made out of a double-side quilted cotton and trimmed in binding. It is folded over on the top edge and slips over the chair. It works well for eating out and shopping carts.
Fabric - will need 1.2m double-faced quilted fabric 115cm
thread
4 m coordinating folded woven braid binding 13mm wide when folded
Pattern
1. Draw a rectangle 21" wide and 42" long
2. Draw a line down the center of the rectangle in pencil going down the length (this is just a guide line)
3. On the length from the top, measure down 11" from both sides, draw a line. This will be the fold line on the finished chair. This line goes from side to side.
4. Count down again from the top 19" on both sides, mark. This is going to be your loop placement line
5. Count down again 23", mark on both sides.
6. From the bottom, count up 9" - from this then count in 6". This is going to make the leg openings. From the 23" mark from the top, draw a line that curves into the mark you just made. Then from this, curve down to the bottom to finish the leg opening. Do the same on the other side.
Sewing
1. From quilted fabric, cut out baby chair (trying to use the pattern above) Mark placement lines.
2. Cut 22" of binding, Pin or baste the binding around the front edge of the baby chair Edgestitch in order to catch the inner edge and underside.
3. Cut two 10cm (4") lengths of binding. Sew close and fold in half to form a loop - raw edges together. Baste loops to right side of chair on the loop placement lines.
4. Fold the chair in half along the fold line, right sides together. Sew down the side to form a pocket that will fit over a chair. Turn to right side and press
5. Find the middle of the remaining binding and working from the center back, pin the binding along the back edge and around each leg opening to front edge. You will have a length of binding that is left when you meet the front edge. DO NOT cut this off - this is the ties. Edgestitch along the binding to finish it off. Tie a knot at the end to stop the ties from unraveling.
6. Slip the chair over a chair back or cart seat. Sit the child down and wrap it in front of the child and throw the tie loop at the back. Tie in place. Keep your fingers crossed to the child does not figure out how to get out!
