Scrunchie recipe

- 1/8 yd wide x 22" long (2 out of 1/8 yd) and 8 to 11 " of elastic - depends on how tight you want it - I made hundreds of these out of uglies and sold for .75 each at craft show. I used 1/8" elastic and tied it together at ends then overlaped scrunchie and topstitched through all layers (elastic and all). turned out great.

> thanks so much for posting this about scrunchies! I have been sewing for  over 20 years, yet when I went to make these, I flopped big time...such a  simple thing!!

One question: when you tie the elastic, don't you worry that the knot will  come undone with all the stress of using the scrunchie?

I use the ready made ponytail bands, or just rubber bands. I take a a 4 inch wide strip of fabric about 12-16 inches long and sew the short ends together to make a circle. Then I scrunch this up and put the rubber band around it. I pull the raw edges of the fabric together over and enclosing the band and serge the raw edges.

This is very quick and easy, I make a couple of scrunchies for each outfit with the scraps before I take the thread out of my serger

You can use narrower bands or longer or shorter, even contrast or fancy thread.

Fabric: 3-1/2" wide by 30" long

Elastic: 3/8" wide by 9" long*

*I had thickish hair, so 9" was great for me to make a pony-tail with a doubled scrunchie. My nieces have thinner hair, and I noticed that with the ones I gave to them, they had tripled the scrunchie, and it didn't look as nice. So now I use about 7" for their scrunchies.

Oops, forgot to add that oval braid elastic works best for scrunchies--elastic does not fold over or twist, and is used in commercial ones. Also, one day I was in a fabric shop and a woman was purchasing 1/4 yd of a lot of swimwear fabric. Turns out that she makes scrunchies out of them and sells them in beauty shops.
