Skirt Lengths and Shapes

These recommendations come from Easy Guide to Sewing Skirts by Marcy Tilton (Tauton Press)

Straight skirt: hour glass, rectangle, inverted triangle:  recommend they end just above knee, or end where the leg begins to taper

A-line/Flared:  hour glass, rectangle, pear:  probably best style on most women, and may be the only style that works well on full-hipped figures

Gored:  hour glass, rectangle, pear, inverted triangle:  A classic, one of the most flattering styles, the vertical lines of a gored skirt create an illusion of height and slimness.

Pleated/ Tucked:  rectangle, inverted triangle:  pleats are pictured across a portion of the front and do not go all the way around, all around pleats only flatter slim, narrow hipped figures.

Gathered:  hourglass , pear:  gathered skirts visually add weight and bulk to any figure so choose fabric and pattern carefully
