256. Peter Montague

Film#: 170875 Page#: 312 Ord.#: 12239 As the descendnts of Drogo took the Latin spelling of their name so as not to be confused with the English who inhabited England before they were conquered in 1066, so did many of the descendants of Peter Montague take the Irish pronounciation of the name Montague during the American Revolution so as not to be associated with the English who they were fighting. The Montague name in Ireland came from MacTague and they are not in any way related to the Montague descendants of Drogo. The Irish pronounciation is Montag with a long "a" and the "ue" silent. NOTE: With the creation of the new counties from Orange County land area in June 1749, the Orange County Court decided "The court judging the present situation inconvenient to the inhabitents are of the opinion that the court ought to be held near the dividing line of the lands of Erasmus Taylor and Timothy Crosthawait." That site is the present location of the town of Orange. On July 6, 1752, the first court session was held in the new building. One of the members serving on the first grand jury of the reconstituted County of Orange, of May 24, 1750, was Peter Montague.
